Decorative, people were asking for a way to get the vines that you see covering old buildings in the Meadows for themselves, so that's what they're for.

Be advised, they can be tricky to plant. They need close but not too close spacing to some flat wall. Also, if the wall has any protruding portions, the ivy might choose to grow at a 90° plane to the long flat wall you intended.
You can also place it and it looks healthy but come back in a day to learn:
1) it needs more space
2) needs open sky above

Even a small ledge 10m above it can be too much.

Just be mindful of these challenges and you can cover your castle in aesthetically appealing ivy giving it that ancient look!
