elevation will produce snow even outside mountains.

Once, when I started a new world seed, the spawn point was at such an unusually high elevation in the Meadows that the beech and birch trees in the immediate vicinity all had the snow effect.

A very cool thing to see.

I built one home so tall it had a snowed roof in the plains. But that is a lovely screenshot!

All Mountains biomes are elevation, so any area that has a high elevation is just a mountains biome if it’s high enough.
