I tried taming boars once.. then a couple Swamp raids happened, and my poor boars were the first targets.

Then I spent another 2 to 3 in-game days finding leftover Skeletons and Draugr chasing around Deer in a non-stop game of tag.

use a pickaxe OR hoe to create a barrier around your base. You can either dog a trench, or use raise ground on hoe to make a wall. It looks pretty cool, and you can decorate it, like with log spikes

nice wide trench, and wall to stop mobs from attacking your base
i go wide enough so trolls cant swing their club across them
