Do you think this game will ever recover it's player base?
Just taking a look at Steam Charts[steamcharts.com] it's clear this game peaked near launch and then has taken a sharp nosedive ever since. More than double the number of people (at the time of this post) have played Team Fortress 2 over the last 24 hours than Valheim. Team Fortress 2, a fourteen year-old game, higher peak concurrency over the last 24 hours.

I'm sorry to say this but I don't think it can recover. Sure, a large part of the player base might come back for a large content update or something, but that won't last long.

What do you think, Vikings?

This happens with a lot of games between updates and new content. The game is so good, that people played tons of hours. So it’s easy to need a break. Once the new update hits, the game is gonna go ballistic again.

It's not that kind of game. It's basically a straight playthrough one-and-done game, though I think most people enjoy doing another round or two (I think I did four playthroughs? With a group, then solo, then with a group using ValheimPlus mod to greatly raise the difficulty, then solo the same way.)

There is really no point in playing through again until significant new content is added. I don't plan to be back for hearth and home or the new biome. (Maybe in two new biomes... or maybe just wait for "release"...)

But this also isn't an MMO or drop-in game (like TF2) so the total player count online is meaningless.

I got my money's worth already, anyway.
I would love to see the game be more "roguelike" with enough random, interesting content that playing through many times is still fun but I'm not anticipating that direction.

nah, it's just a survival game like the 100's of others. a lot of them start out like that and once the players are tired of the content which is bound to happen, they move on to something else just as boring lol.

Valheim is up there tho, it's the first of the genre in a long time to actually get me wanting to play. they all get old eventually. the list of survival games i bought is ridiculous. some of them i'll go back to, but the majority were just a waste of money.

Valheim, for a solo experience is gonna stay in my pc for a while tho.

Granted, it's still in the top 20 for peak concurrency, which is great! But when it came out it seemed like the next big thing. Clearly it wasn't on the same level as being the next Minecraft or CS:GO or PUBG, but this game at one point had around half a million playing it simultaneously. That's nothing to sneeze at.

I hope you're right, I'd like to see the player base come back but I don't think anything short of a major build release will do it.

I think this game has nothing to do with TF2 and that Valheim is in a healthy EA state at the moment. The game has nothing to recover from. The hype has predictively died down a bit since the launch and a large portion of the players have moved on. Some will come back, some are just playing it less intensively and some are done with the game altogether. The numbers will go up again with the incoming updates. Who knows what the numbers will be a year from now? The game has already surpassed the expectations of most people.

Is it this topic again where utterly clueless people completely lacking critical reasoning fail to realise this is a single player (with coop) game that you paid for once, and not an MMO type? Joy.

LOL its literally your most played game in your steam library but here you are complaining in thread after thread about how bad it is....

After people have their cake and eat it too, they want more cake.

That is pretty funny. ..or sad, I'm not sure.

They won't ever recover their player base at the peak of their viral success, and they don't need to. For about the thousandth time, Valheim is a. an indie production and b. not an MMORPG - they don't need to keep players trapped in a Skinner box for years on end to make their game profitable. They've already made more money with it than they could have hoped for in their wildest dreams and they can afford to proceed at whatever pace they wish. If they want to fix bugs and adhere to their road map rather than cashing in as much as possible, then more power to them. It might even pay off if they release another game years down the line and people remember them as a developer that did right by their players despite their breakout success and saw their previous project all the way through to the end.
