Question about No Build Cost
I've played this game a million times over. I have just got back on for Ashlands and decided to make a new base to start off. Re-familiarize myself with the building system.

I saw this No Build Cost option in modifiers, and I want to ask -

If I turn No Build Cost on, will it mess with my game in any way?
Disable achievements for example.
Also, if I turn No Build Cost on, can I turn it back off once I am done with making my new base? I have no interest in keeping it on.

Edit: I am not talking about -console commands, debug commands, or mods.
I am talking about the In-Game World Settings Menu that allows you to adjust world settings to turn off dropping items on death, allow items to go through portals, building cost, amount of resources dropped, etc.

This is not a Mod, it is build into the game.

If turned on it will not mess with your game in any way.

There are no achievments in game yet.

You can turn it off and on as much as you like.

If you add -console to launch options in steam you can press F5 to open console in-game. You then type devcommands, you then type debugmode, you then close the console and press the "B" key.

This will enable no cost. When in this mode you can build what ever you like with no material cost. You can also create or upgrade any item from any workbench regardless of it's level.

This can only be done on a private world, none of this works on a server. It will only be active for your current session. If you log out and come back you will need to re-enable no cost mode.

There is currently no "cheat" flag added to your game files.

All that said , with great power comes great responsibility. Know what you are getting into.

Cheat Flags are added to your stats. ANY thing you do using devcommands is recorded. Hit F5 and type /stats. It even records how many times you checked your stats lol. There is ALOT of great stats being tracked. You can use pageup pagedown to view them since it is about 4 screens of information. The devcommands you used are at the end of the list. The "cheat" count is on the first page. Many servers admins now ask you to send this file to be sure you are not abusing the established rules of the server.

EDIT: You do not need to hit F5, you can run the /stats command from your chat window also

Thank you! The other comments were talking about -console commands, debug modes, /stats, and I had no idea what I was reading.

This was the first and only helpful response.

My question is about the in-game world modifier settings, which include No Build Cost, Allow all items through portals, increase resource drop rate, etc.
I do not wish to use a -console, debug, or mod, as I have no need to do such a thing when there is an in-game world modifier menu.

Sorry I always forget they are in world modifiers now. Wasn't always the case.

they are all effectively the same thing. the only difference is no build modifier does not allow you to craft any items. only building structures. the console command does both. but the result is the same they are both creative modes and not supposed to be used for regular play. the new ashlands portal is also useless if you enable metal teleport setting.

the sad part is you still can even on servers if the servers have no cheater protection you can use a mod to enable devcommands on servers client side. you wont be able to use ALL commands. like weather control is not possible without admin rights as its a global setting. but you can enable godmode fly and no build cost. so have to moderate a server or have anti cheat measures on the server.
Empada May 28, 2024 @ 10:38am
the result is not the same, the console method enables you to see everything buildable. it will spoil the experience of searching the new building pieces in the Ahslands. it will also show you everything craftable. it is sure not the same thing

Yeah I had clowns using mod/ commands on my server way back in the day. Spawning in hundreds of 2 star dragurs etc.. I blocked those people out fast.

Not a huge fan of mods myself. Especially in early access. Valheim + was pretty cool, though, but i don't use any these days.

its both still clearly not meant for normally playing the game. when you can spawn everything into existence endlessly there is no challenge. you can literally spam spike defenses anywhere and steam roll the game. gets even easier with beartraps and co once found.

the problem is most vanilla servers arent probaly moderated. people who cheat in multiplayer especially on servers they dont own dont belong on multiplayer at all.

Correct. When you use dev commands "Cheater!" is added to the first line of your stats exclamation point and everything! When you use world modifiers you do not.

This makes sense, this was probably implemented before they had that speed run contest.
