Spears are pointless.
I would love if they changed the way you hold the spear because in its current state doesn't act like a traditional spear and more of a javelin and when using it as a melee weapon becomes painfully frustrating when you have to stand so close to any enemy to even get a hit, as a spear it renders it useless for its role. It would make so much sense if you could change your stance from holding it with 2 hands like a traditional spear or with a shield as well as the stance you hold it currently for when you wanna throw it, Hopefully they'll sort this because iv seen so many people with the same feed back so they'll have to have acknowledged it at some point.

At end game... not really. Two bosses (Bonemass and Yagluth) have extreme resistance against Pierce damage, which is a whopping 75% damage reduction. Even assuming you have Spears at 100 with a maxed Fang Spear, you're still only looking at around 20 damage per stab, and that'll take ages to do any meaningful damage.

Now, you could main two different weapon types and effectively engage anything. I plan on making a character who uses non-tower shields, spears and swords, since that should effectively eliminate every enemy in the game.

I guess I wasn't clear earlier; I'll be using the torch as weapon in burial chambers which adds to blunt weapon skill and thus opens up a secondary weapon skill. I also plan on using stagbreaker as my AoE weapon which also relies upon blunt weapon skill.

As for swords; pretty sure Bonemass is just as resistant to slashing as piercing.. unless something has changed?

Bonemass does take less damage from slashing, but it's not as bad as piercing.

get the first person mod and then you can poke the spear in any direction you want

I feel like the first person mod is an absolute must. it allows for better terrain battles, you can actually swing up like in real life@!!@!@

I did see the 1P mod. Might need to try that if I can figure out how mods work.

Please remember that as of now modding is not officially supported. It's done at your own risk, there are no guarantees for future compatibility. Please keep backups of your save files before you start modding. If you need technical support, please always include a full list of active AND prior mods, since that can influence the game's behaviour with regard to bugs.

That's pretty optimistic. This isn't near the top of the list of concerns overall. But you might have a chance. So far reworks make up the vast majority of post release content so it's well possible we might see a weapon animation rework, armour rework, sailing rework, new language developed for the game, the game engine changed, and the wheel reinvented before we all forget about Valheim.
