How does "optterrain" works?
Do I need to do it only once, or do I need to do it in batches? I have a very big base in the works, and I tried to use the command near it, but not INSIDE it. I'm not sure how much changed, and it was a pretty fast output at that. Does it only works up to a certain radius?

Its a radius, the command give feedback if it found something to improve

Maybe backup before you use any console commands.

I was walked the edge (of the base, not the map!), repeating the command occasionally. Only the first one did a lot of work, the rest said nothing to change or just a literal handful of terrain changes.

I did backup, and after that command nothing seemed to change much even if there was a lot of modified terrain nearby (ore, ground dug up, that kind of stuff.)

Guess I'll save it for future bases.

The command does nothing for builds you do during or after this patch. They are already using the "optimized" terrain version. Ofc that is different thing if new patch notes would say they improve it again.

Any future terrain modifications you make are already using the new terrain system and won't be affected by optterrain.

It's only needed and working for terrain changes you made before this patch

it works for a certain radius like all of the other console commands. however, i tried it on a massive base i had built but never was able to actually use and occupy. due to the size of my base, it stuttered and lagged HORRIBLY when near the base. i leveled an entire forest area, flattened parts of it, and made a massive estate. upon nearing the base, it took forever to spawn in, everyone i play with also lags and stutters, and you could literally run through the entire base as if it wasnt even there. as soon as i left the island a decent ways, the lag and stuttering stopped. i was hopefully upon reading about this new update that issue would be fixed so i did it, but it didnt fix anything. in fact, it adjusted the terrain at various points and raised terrain where i had lowered it, except now the terrain is impossible to change. pickaxes and hoes no longer work. not sure if this is the intended design or a bug they are patching but it really annoyed me. loading of smaller bases does spawn much faster without using the command, however, huge bases are still impossible to build in the game if you want something actually playable. my advice is not to use the new command on your bases. it may ruin them and cause terrain to appear where you dont want it to with no way to remove it.

the principle of this command is to migrate old terrain code to more new efficient terrain code.
the fact that nothing changed is pretty much the goal => having better performance while not impacting gameplay.
from the various comments here, i guess the only people impacted are those who used an exploit (knowingly or not) so if you dind't use this particular exploit, you shouldn't see anything different from a gameplay perspective, but better performance in case of lots of terrain changes.
this command is only to use in the case of changes to terrain made before the patch

In our base you can feel a difference but it is still no fun to play. Still lagging arround but not that hard like bevor. but still unplayable. Outside in the landscape everything is ok. We stopped playing again untill a better code is implemented.

The lags you mention is the sheer number of parts your base is build of. Our largest base dumps our FPS to low 40is while outside everything is 60 FPS (capped). Can't do anything but waiting for improvements.

You guys complaining at 40 fps while I'm having a blast with about 20fps in heavy areas :v
