Odin appearing

The past four or five in-game nights I have been outside at my base and have seen Odin (or whoever the cloaked stranger with the staff is) three times. Only when I have made a move in his direction has he disappeared in a puff of smoke. What, if anything, in the game does this portend?

I think he is just watching you to make sure he chose wisely. Makes it kinda cool when he does.

It's just the game's way of letting you know that Odin is keeping track of the mission he set out for you ;)
You have also met his messenger Hugin, but we have yet to meet his other raven Munin ;)
