Struggling with the dedicated server option
I'm trying to get a Valheim private server up and running. I can connect to it on a loopback and internal IP, but I can't get to it on the public IP and nor can friends. It simply appears to time out; doesn't get as far as prompting for a password for them. My router has port forwarding up and running.

Note: if I simply run a local game normally, ticking the 'server' box as you would, friends -can- connect in. It's just the dedicated server option that's not playing ball.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Issue like that is entirely on your firewall or port forwarding. It is hard to guess what you did wrong about it. You need to forward 2456-2458 UDP ports. Specifically just UDP needed, i didn't forward TCP at all and people can join it.

Just to make sure, is your private WAN IP the same as your public WAN IP?

If not, you'll most likely need a dedicated IP adress from your ISP to make it work.

The only way I could get people connected to mine was to use the ingame connect by IP option.
The steam Favourite servers list just does not work.

The what? I wish there was a way to favorite an IP address but you can't do that, have to type it each time you join a server.

Unless you make server public so it shows up in the lobby list but then everyone in the world sees your server.. not good.

The hardware isn't quite that clever; so it's set for Public 2456 > 2458 to Private 2456 > 2458 for both TCP and UDP concurrently.

Moot point though.

Running the dedicated server on my static IP, people can't connect (and neither can I)

Running a 'server' game from within the game, thus using the same static IP, people -can- connect.

There is also the firewall issue that solved it in other thread just today. Some antivirus apps block ports too.

You can get one setup on Amazon Lightsail pretty quickly. It has a free trial and you can even complete the game within the trial period. Just google for Amazon Lightsail Valheim and you should see an official walk through on how to set it up plus the coupon that you can get.
