How tedious is it using the trick to find silver?
I'm not sure I want to kill bonemass yet because my base isn't yet prepared for flying raids, but I'd like to get some silver.

How easy/time-consuming is it to use the trick to find silver without killing bonemass? (trying not to give spoilers)

I consider that a disadvantage. If there's silver in an area, it just takes a few hits with the hammer to locate pretty much exactly where it's at. Withe the wider radius of the wishbone, combined with the slow speed of the beeps, it can take quite a while to pinpoint where it's at. Even when I think I know where it's at, I have to dig around to find it.

If you're having difficulty finding silver, you might be too low, but you also may have other things interfering with the hammer. If you hammer near obsidian or wood, I believe it registers as '0'. I generally ignore areas with trees, and clear obsidian if it looks like an area where silver might be.
Silver only appears above the obsidian line. You don't have to clear any obsidian deposits.

Silver appears above where the obsidian starts, but you can definitely find silver and obsidian in the same area:

Well as it turns out, I easily found some silver using the wishbone. I would have had to dig a fair bit to even see it get damaged by the stagbreaker. So in this case, it was probably unlucky RNG with the spawning.

I haven't looked for more within the same mountain though so there may be more that are more easily seen.

In the same area yes, but I've never found silver under an obsidian deposit. The lowest silver deposit I've found has always been above the highest obsidian deposit I've found.

It may have changed in the mistlands update. I found a second silver deposit pretty low in the mountains but it was buried fairly deep. There were obsidian deposits a level above it.
The mine in the picture above is one of, or maybe my first silver mines from over 2 years ago. I think you can see it in the left side of this picture, although it's hard to tell at this angle.

I'm not saying it can't happen just that I have never seen it. I've seen other things that aren't supposed to happen like Fuling villages regenerate or leeches attack a boat. (Yes, I have the screen shots, and no, not using mods).
I dont think the drake raids cause enough of a risk to your base to use as the sole reason to justify not killing bonemass.

It wasn't my base but my boars I was worried about. But the barn I built inside the enclosure seems to work very well. I don't think I've lost a single boar yet despite two drake raids and two surtling raids. Not even a boar outside of the barn.

I suppose I was also worried I'd have to replant trees if they took too much damage but nope at least not so far.

And now that i have onions, boar meat isn't even as useful as it was. So yeah I was worried about nothing it seems.
I just recently used the stagbreaker method and it didn't take me long at all. I snuck around a nearby golem, found a flat-ish place close to a frost cave and methodically pounded my way across the area. I believe that the golems are the important part. I always have one show up when I'm mining silver. (Make sure part of your mining hole at max depth, or at least where your head is below the vein to ensure that you're out of reach of angry golem attacks.)

Bonus: I dug down at the Too Hard message and found the very edge of the vein with only a tiny bit showing. When I hit it, I saw a lot of damage numbers pop up. A good portion of the vein mined itself. (Had to dodge the golem while building a chest in the hole and gathering my treasure so it wouldn't despawn.)

I just used that method again, and it worked perfectly, as usual. There was no golem in the area, but a ton of drake. I normally don't pay much attention to them, but just when I saw the "To Hard", a pair of drake started hitting me, then another one joined in. Not only was I losing health fast, but the timer on my frost resistant mead was running down.

The silver was just above the stone tower that I build a temporary "base" in, which was very nice. The stone tower was also on a very steep slope where I climbed up from meadows, so I made a cart, fill it with all the silver and rock, gave it a slight nudge, and everything was waiting for me near my boat when I went down.

Before I went down, I decided to checkout another tower near where I was staying, and it had a marker in it. Since I'm playing no-map, I clicked on it to get the direction. I went to the cliff edge that it pointed to so I could place a marker to remember the direction, looked down, and there it was!

I had just planned on setting up a camp to start looking for silver and wolves so I could make a cape, and now I have 100ish silver and a camp above Moder, both of which are a 2 minute sail across a channel from my base.

The only downside is that I haven't seen many wolves, so I have maybe 7 pelts and no trophy, so no cape.

I get ya. And yeah, boars arent valuable for the meat but it's nice to have them for the easy skins, especially if you like the muck bombs.

RNG giveth and taketh away. I found a runestone up there too but it pointed me in a direction that isn't on the same island. This may take awhile. But navigating by "bed" is interesting!
Just went up to the Moder alter and made a comfy home in a tower that's right next to it. Got two wolf trophies and three more teeth, so I can make the cape and at least a couple of wolf armor pieces.

I'm not feeling good with a bronze mace on wolves. Two hits isn't enough, and the third one always woofs due to the knockback. With some wolf armor they shouldn't be much of a threat, but I think I'm going to have to splurge on an iron mace.

I do still need to go kill Bonemass, so that's next on the list. Enough fun in the mountains for a bit.

FWIW, one time that I played nomap, Moder was north of Mistland! I hope your RNG is not that bad.

Every time I get confident... died to drake raid last night because I didn't have any frost mead on me and didn't feel like running into my house to get some. Well that was a mistake.

The drakes hit so much harder without frost resistance haha. Then they proceeded to kill the vast majority of boars outside of the barn while I respawned, donned my good armor and killed the rest of them.

I still have plenty of breeding boars inside the barn so its no big deal though.
I know this thread is old but keep this in mind:

If you find a golem, silver is very close.
