One staff for one spell? Why no hand casting?
Wouldn't it be better if we could cast our spells directly from our hands instead of swaping from staff to staff to change the spell?

It would also increase the possibility of having new spells because the way it is now and with the development of the game, we will see a full row of the inventory just with staves.

I like to have all four available spells with me but with the progression of the game, it may collapse due new additions, because in my opinion, I think in the future we will see new spells and mage related stuff.

I started playing as a full mage and I have with me all the four staves, and I swap according to the demand of enemies and my eitr. But with the game progression, more spells could be added and we can see more staves, which isn't good because there will be a stack of staves in the inventory.

About the staves, I use firstly the protection otherwise you can get hit kill, then I swap from fire to frost according to the enemies and summon skeletons so I can level up blood magic as well, that's why I carry all four.

I assume no actual new category of magic will be touched on. So yes you may get new staffs, but they will simply replace the existing ones like the iron sword replaces the bronze sword.

I am hoping the ashlands will come with an improved fire staff, and DN with an improved ice staff. They should make your magic abilities on par with the currently vastly superior dvergr fire and ice mages. And equivalent to 0*, 1* and 2* mages for 0, 50 and 100 skill in elemental magic.

It is kind of sad though to realize the DN is going to be the end, and the DN tier weapons and armor will never shine in an even tougher environment. But such is the nature of having finite biomes haha.

Even though, most devs follow this trend, of limitating keys shortcuts on pc, to stay somewhat close to what you can do on a controller/console; it doesn't mean it's not a stupid and probably, lazy decision.
I agree. It sounds lazy.

Well, when Mistlands started, it opened the possibility for our character to cast spells from the already in-game npc Goblin shaman, the fireball from staff of embers. The frost staff is sort of unique, because it shoot ice balls and it's the Drake attack.

If we follow your logic, we will be able to cast those Dvergr mages uniques: meteors, healing and the guided purple sphere.

I think that if we want to enjoy a fully mage perspective, then we will need to go after mods like https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/KGvalheim/MagicHeim/.

This mod not only add many new spells but also a new hotbar in which the player can swap from spell to spell without needing to change staff.

guess it depends on the controller. Its pretty bad if you go atari 2 button (did you know the joystick itself had a buttonish function? ) or even early nintendo with like 6 or 8 or whatever buttons, but modern 'controllers' have what, 20+ ? Games with > 20 buttons become difficult to play even if you can map them 'your way'. Not sure how games handle controllers, do they make the direction pad 4 buttons or keep it as a redundant joystick? The redundancy determines how many usable buttons you have... maybe its 'required' to keep them doing the same thing?
