I think the same. On the one hand, it's freaking convenient, and not being able to teleport and build a boat would be a giant pain in the bum. On the other, every time I build a base I start building a nice dock before realizing that it was a waste of time, since every time I come back I'll just destroy my boat.
I think the preparation for sea voyages would just change. You would carry the non-teleportable materials in your hull to make any number of long ships at potential high interest destinations. This would turn into second nature, on par with having portal mats on you.
You won't destroy your boat & teleport it to a destination. Instead you'll just use some mats in a chest next to your portal at the destination in question to build another boat.
I don't think losing materials is a good solution to deconstructing your ships for safety reasons...because it's too 'easy'. The mere fact you have to dismantle it by force, is annoyance enough.
Nope; I'd stop playing single player, and designate one (or more) of my coworkers teammates to guard the boat. No more breaking it, if we can't easily rebuild it.
... actually, I'd probably just give up on this game entirely. "Playing" is already a chore; if all else remained the same but boats became a less feasible option than they already are... I'd go play something that feels less like a second job and more like a game.
That would make them borderline useless yeah. There is an argument to be made for runs without portals at all, I may be interested in that in some future run. But that's definately not everyones cup of tea and is beyond the scope of this discussion.
Sea portals.
Portals big enough to sail a ship through.
...Okay, it might sound silly, but still.
how did you get that portal there to begin with if it was on a far away island? - your boat.
the main purpose of the boat is exploration, its only a side bonus that it can be used to transport ores.
i mean, if you're complaining about being able to pick it up and go through a portal to build it there so you can bring the ore back, why don't you complain about world hopping which literally makes using the boat for transporting useless?
