Keep builds on world, but reset world biomes?

TLDR: Trying to save a vanilla world a friend has, that we put a lot of time into.. but we'd like to also see the new content on that world.

Is this possible?

I'm wondering if this discussion is already happening.. has happened.. or if it's even possible.

If we have an extensively explored older world, with lots of builds already...

say from before the first expansion..

Is there a way to get the new content in the map?

Like.. reset the explored area.. the biomes.. so the plains and mountains get the new content?

I know there are mods that let you copy builds... but that's quite a task.. to get them all.. and then to put them back where they exist on a new world of the same seed... oof.

Areas you have explored, or even you've been close to will no longer generate new content.

That said, there is a mod that can update these biomes for you, so they DO generate new content. It will try to spare your builds, but of course there's no guarantee that things won't go south, so it is highly encouraged (regardless if you use the mod or not) to make backups of your personal data.

The mod's name is called "UpgradeWorld" and is available through the ThunderStore mod manager, which I can highly recommend.

Mind, you have to run UpgradeWorld only once, then you can disable modding completely.

Using the command "genloc" after enabled devcommands is supposed to add features like what you're looking for.

If it works, it's possible that the features will end up inside of a location you've built at btw. I'd back up my saves before trying it out.

I reset a map on one of my worlds just to see if it will make a difference... because technically an "unexplored map" should be enough. It didn't remove my builds, just reset the map. We'll see what happens on release!

So, does areas which you never visited or was never close to will contain new content? Bcs I haven't visited like 2/3 of my map.

Thats how it usually works, only area chunks you have not explored will be able to add new stuff.
This is a pretty big update so issues may occur as compatibility is something the devs want, but cant be promised.
The devs do try their best to not disrupt old saves.
