Thunderstore v Nexus Mods
Whats the difference with the mod websites now?

Iv noticed a couple of old mods i had have stopped updating on Nexus and moved to Thunderstore under different names.

I'v never used Thunderstore before, wondering why there was a need to move from Nexus?

If you only intend to ever mod Valheim, then Thunderstore is your go-to. If you want to mod games that aren't unity, then you get to either do it manually from github repos or you use Nexusmods. Regardless of option mod manager, you always have the option of just doing it manually, or even making your own.
I use nexus for everything but Satisfactory - they have their own. I'm not going to download a dozen mod managers just to mod my games, I'd rather do it manually if I have to put up with politics. Nexus allows you to have a centralized location to store all your mods instead of putting them all on your game drive and then hard/soft linking them to your game drive, this saves actual space on your game drive for games. I don't know if you can do that with thunderstore or if it even supports complex configurations. But the fact that thunderstore only supports unity games - bepinx, it limits your game modding potential.

As for simple, thunderstore is simple cause it only does one thing: mod unity games.
Nexus is a mess of UI for sure and it gets tangled if you don't know what you're doing in it, but it supports more complex modding requirements and most game engines.
I have never even looked at Thunderstore (yet), but by the sound of it, just the fact that you don't need to register to download mods and that it's specialized on Unity games probably makes it better option unless there's no alternative. It's good to finally have some actual competition in that scene, especially considering the disaster that is Beth-net (nothing to do with Valheim, but Bethesda game mods are huge deal for business model of Nexus).

Have had a few mods from Thunderstore not work, how do i bug report?
Of Thunderstore I dont like that is more invasive. Installing overwolf and with past problem of malware and trojan in the mods that have put their software in the blacklist of several antivirus and anti malware.

Also this is not competition as is not at production level but on distribution level.
So simply some mods are split in two different repository.
Modders need to upload on both, or select one.
And for the second... now whatever repository you select you miss some of the mods.
Manual install is the easiest way to have all the mods, and this defeats the idea of a repository.

oh yea?
Didn't think of that, some modders adding in spyware n junk.
Pretty bad idea for any game to be so blind to their modding that they let people add trojans to the mods because of how poor their modding support is.
Hey folks,

please remember that as of now modding is not officially supported. It's done at your own risk, there are no guarantees for future compatibility. Please keep backups of your save files before you start modding. If you need technical support, please always include a full list of active AND prior mods, since that can influence the game's behaviour with regard to bugs.

Have a good day!
I like that you don't have to register at thunderstore to download. Both managers suck, thunderstores wouldn't even do anything for me. Manual works best, is frankly easier, and then you also know where all the configs are - plus you can use any mods from anywhere.

The downside of manual is tracking versions and updates yourself, but since the managers suck at this anyway it's moot. Nexus website let's you track new versions of mods you follow, but of course you have to be logged in - and they auto log you out often enough it becomes worthless. Thunderstore tracks updates as "upload N ago" instead of the uploaded date, which is a PITA and you have to track version number instead.

Roll on version 1 release w/ official mod support.

Thankyou for joining the convo.

What is going to happen with modding in the future?
It seems to bring a crowd.

As far as I know, Iron Gate has a positive attitude towards modding. But as long as the game code is actively being worked on, it just doesn't make sense to focus on mod compatibility for every new update.

The topic has its own mega-thread in the Suggestions sub-forum where you can add your voice:

Ok.
I see no need to join a megathread on everyone wanting modding to the game if the devs are not going to bother.
:S

Yeah I don't know the details but there's a lot of Nerd Politics on these sites that can result in some mods and developers being banned for personal / idealistic / profit reasons. I just stick with Thunderstore because their manager is still good while the replacement of Nexus Mod Manager with Vortex was a disaster.

For real!
I feel like they are acting like Karen's at a church bake sale.
I’ve used Nexus/Vortex for many years and with a lot of games. I find it easy to use. As far as mods moving over, just check to see if it’s the same author or that the whoever posted acknowledged the original author.

Hey,

I'm Dana, from Overwolf, and I came across your comment :)

First, I want to clarify that Overwolf and the apps on its platform are completely safe and secure.
As for mods in Thunderstore - the Thunderstore team is responsible for moderating the uploaded content independently of Overwolf.

Please feel free to reach out to me and my team if you have any more questions or concern.

Thanks!

Thunderstore is easy and simple to use, it just works. And playing with friends for valheim is easy.

You just cope your profil code and send it to you friend, and they then download your mod list, and it just works, no need to tinker with loading orders and stuff.

Thunderstore, is a "noob" friendly mod mananger.
My experience with Thunder store thus far has been great, while i whole heatedly endorse and use nexus for all of my modding, In this case TS with valheim makes the process way easier, TS will not only provide links to the TS website via the launcher so you can more deeply investigate the mods you looking at you can also download from the launcher itself, upon downloading you will notice the option to download with dependencies, meaning that unlike nexus TS will grab EVERYTHING you need for that mod and install it, were as you need to separately DL the dependencies and install them independently.

Additionally updating is much easier as when you v loaded your profile it will say up top that there are updates, once clicked it will give you a list of all mods being updated and simultaneously update all mod in one click.

Side notes the database is a very nice touch to have on the launcher itself meaning you don't need the website to find mods its all rather centralized

All in all its a much easier platform to use almost like steam, centralized storefront, with build it mod section, same premises, just without the store front. nice thing is you can choose to start modded or vanilla, launcher takes care of the rest.
