Thunderstore v Nexus Mods
Whats the difference with the mod websites now?

Iv noticed a couple of old mods i had have stopped updating on Nexus and moved to Thunderstore under different names.

I'v never used Thunderstore before, wondering why there was a need to move from Nexus?

No idea but there also could be the possibility that some mods were abandoned and others took them over and moved them to the other site to avoid a potential take down/conflict.

Yeah I don't know the details but there's a lot of Nerd Politics on these sites that can result in some mods and developers being banned for personal / idealistic / profit reasons. I just stick with Thunderstore because their manager is still good while the replacement of Nexus Mod Manager with Vortex was a disaster.

Ok, so 1 upvote from Mharr for Thunderstore.

Vortex auto handled the BepinEx modding tool for me, gave me a popup to tell me it needed it to run mods, and installed it for me.

I cant seem to google the vortex disaster event, idk what that means.

ThunderStore is it for me. Never used Nexus (ok I downloaded the HD textures there once), since I don't like to register just to download a few mods.

ThunderStore is easy, configures everything for you, resolves dependencies and notifies you of updates for mods that you then can install if so desired. And it has the store included (as the name implies) so you can browse through mods to your hearts content. And you can run the game vanilla if that is your intent.

AND you don't need to register.

Highly recommended.

Sounds like the only difference between Thunderstore and vortex is you have to register.

The disaster (for me as a user anyways) is the UI garbage Vortex insists on filling your screen with, it's very much of the new Windows start menu / carrier owned mobile phone school and I'm not here for that in a program with two general functions: Update Mods and Launch Game.

(not looking to start an argument just legitimately curious how other applications do stuff)

Have noticed there is no social scene for Thunderstore, no chat area or posting tabs.

Thunderstore's manager is dedicated to just Unity games, afaik there's no FNIS equivalent to deal with.

I have used both, Thunderstore is by far the superior choice.

Since no one has mentioned it, the Nexus Disaster refers to when Nexus Mods basically told all their modders that once they post files on Nexus, they no longer own the rights to those files and cannot ever delete them. So a ton of modders stopped updating their mods on Nexus and went to other platforms, mainly Thunderstore when it comes to Valheim.

It's business as far as I know. The better mod makers are running a business and being on two outlets offer them greater exposure. Putting up old mods that are no longer intended to update get downloaded by other mod makers who might like to update them. I believe both of them lean more to an open source way of making a living.

The biggest difference that comes to my mind is I find Thunderstore loads quicker on my rural connection.

Wow, that is kinda what wetcanvas.com did with it's people when it sold. It suddenly changed the EULA and the moment you make a text post, or put up an image it becomes legal property of the new company that happens to be an art publishing company so all your mistakes, all your art, all your comments go into their books with no $ to you. You own nothing.

What a crock of sour dragon poop.

Thunderstore is easier to manage for me. I get my texture mod from Nexus though. I prefer the Thunderstore because it's easy and I've been using that set of websites (cursed and now overwolf) for several games for several years. Nexus mods has always had a bit of a bad rep. First with terms telling uploaders they no longer owned their mods and also a couple of data breaches.

WAs interested in both tried thunder-store first and all seemed very easy and above all with minimal add ons...
Went to try Nexus as I noted the Textures I wanted to try our only seemed to be on that one and...
Ended up manually getting the texture packs and resolved never to bother with the Loader again.. Nuff said.
