frost caves?
is it just me or is anyone else having a tough time finding these frost caves. i guess its my fault for enjoying the game too much an basically discovering all the mountain areas all the way up into the mistlands and now i cant find any frost caves. devs did a really good job on that one...its like older players are being punished when newer updates come out. lol this game is awesome but the devs stink and are taking way too long finishing the game and getting updates out. but hey it was fun while it lasted i suppose.

I'm guessing the fact that frost caves only generate in unloaded areas is either a technical limitation, or a choice so the caves don't ruin existing builds and terrain, and so they don't bug out our worlds. It could be a combination of both of these.

Either way, it wasn't very hard for me personally to find them (first newly explored mountain biome, and two frost caves). Just make sure you find large biomes with obsidian cause that's where they can spawn.

Also I'd like to mention that we are lucky this can occur at all, from most of the games with frequent updates and old worlds like Terraria or Minecraft, new things don't spawn in old worlds.

If you already explored the terrain, then they most like won't show up. But if you sail out far away, past any area that is not visible on your map, and locate a mountain big enough, then you will find some in those mountains. Provided it is 100% not explored beforehand.

If you've totally explored (or within 500m of) your mountain areas, then no, there will be no frost caves for you to uncover.

You'll either need to go to a different world, or use a mod to "regenerate" your mountain areas. This is what we did on our world, and it worked fine.

Also fenrings should also drop Fenris hair too, change my mind.

If you caves spawned in explored areas your would be even worse off. At least this way you know all the places you don't need to search. I would suggest that very few people have explored the entire world.

For me it took some searching but the once cave I have found was up high but still on the edge of the mountain biome.

To be honest if you have top tier gear and have found the trader, which you obviously have having explored the entire planet, then the caves are going to be a little underwhelming as they are design to fit into a toon that is not yet ready to enter the plains

We have started a new game to get a better sense of how they feel when you go in from a fresh start.

How far does it need to be from already explored areas? There is a very big mountain island with some swamp and I only explored the swamp, is that too close?

The world generates in a 500m radius around you.

Thanks for that last reply Mharr, I wondered why I didn´t find any Frost Caves in the last Mountain Biome I checked, since I did not discover it at all before the patch. It´s quite big, with ~ 10 silver veins, more than one rune stone to show one of Moders locations, but not a single Frost Cave.

But it´ totaly makes sense that the world has to be generated around the player, even if you never actually go somewhere. Guess they could update their description, since removing the fog of war is not the real issue here.

This means I have to find a mountain biome, where I did not sail right next to it along the coast.

This mod can add caves to already explored mountains: https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/1485

You can also get this mod from ThunderStore. For those allergic to Nexus. ;)

https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/JereKuusela/Upgrade_World/

It is really, really good and very exhaustive, but requires some extensive reading. Don't worry, you can't break stuff unless you really want it.

It can completely reset your entire world, but that's thankfully not the default setting. ;)

Requires use of the console, so you need to have "-console" in your command line for Valheim.

Very much one of those mods that should be a vanilla game feature for server admins

Agree. That one should be included in the base game.
I've found that the cave entrances are very easy to miss. I finally found one on a mountain that I had been over at least a dozen times. It was on the opposite side of a peak I went around on the other side because the slope was less stamina draining.
