Turret Fix When?
This is a bug not a feature. Why would a defense turret attack the player? This is insane...

They can still be used for the new traps IIRC.

Or, well, if you're expecting claw traps to also ignore "friendlies", then I guess it's a waste no matter which device you use them on.
the traps not discriminating is understandable IMO but the ballista is NOT a trap. Not saying they're not out there but I have yet to come across defense turrets in other games that kill friendlies until now. I would rather it be manual instead of kill everything that moves.

Simple don't walk in the way of it lmao

I wouldn't mind that either. But what I'd most like is having both options (ALL THE THINGS) while allowing ammunition to be ejected from the auto-ballista so they can be disabled without having to dismantle them.

Thankfully there's a mod for this: https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/Azumatt/ImFRIENDLY_DAMMIT/

This mod is broken. The turret still uses up ammo when not shooting you.

I totally agree, but then what's the point to add an automated turret that can spawn camp you? I mean, they shouldn't bring it at all.

What I think it is from a design standpoint is they dont want you to build to many of these and make defense to easy for your base. If thats the case make the resource need higher, or limit the number you can spawn in area, but attacking the player is not a balanced approach to fixing turrets being OP.

If that was the point, then it would be simpler if the ballistae were manually used instead. Right now they are supposed to be spammed to cheese the game... considering their limited ammo and crappy aim, you need to build many to succeed.

Then why add raids and items used to defend against them? The devs seem to not understand what their own game is either lol.

Makes me feel like the viking is dumb, why would they otherwise create a weapon that hurts them and their friends? Someone make a meme with a viking having a dumb look on their face while their friends are being shot in the background.

Its more of a trap. It shoots when triggered.
Krieger Dec 21, 2022 @ 9:31am
Think we're pretty lucky to get automated at all, the way i see it, it's rudimentary, it is a basic device that (amzingly) knows shoot if it moves, how is a mechanical device expected to differentiate and i think that is the compromise, you get it but it gets you too.
and he's a viking.. making an automated turret..?
maybe in the next update we'll get a turret ward item or something but it shooting what ever makes sense to me.

It should also require 12 dwarf eyes or something or an eye lens off that flying creature in mistlands.

How is a ballista shooting and aiming automatically anyway? It should not auto target at all.. if it auto shoots and targets it might as well go the full magic bs and only shoot enemies, that way it would be something i could see being used, right now it's something I don't see any use for AND it's not realistic to boot

We can think of it as having a sort of compass that lets the mechanism to "home in" on a creature's life force or whatever (even insects and other animals can sense magnetic fields, or use UV light as basis for sense of direction, and so on). But gameplay purposes and balance should come before lore or realism considerations anyway.

Ballistas don't have that, don't do that, no viking would know how to construct something like that, that would be "magic" if we go the magic approach it makes no sense to have it shoot the owner.

The majority of users does not see a gameplay purpose for this thing as it is
