I learned early to have a spare set of troll armor and stamina potions at my "forward base" always. But the loss of skill penalty is what really bothers me
I don't care for the grave mechanic because it is a dated, unfun mechanic. It's punishment enough to have to get back to where you were, especially if you don't have a portal in the area. Having to do so without any of your stuff is just unnecessary tedium that adds nothing of value to the game. This really should be a gameplay option just like it is in Minecraft.
If you disagree with that design philosophy, use dev commands or mods.
Did you ever consider that when the game is released for Consoles , well then there is no console and no mods ?
The game Balance as it is, without any ways to change the gameplay is in my opinion far beyond broken. I would have refound the game as soon as i would have understood how it really works
Only time something compriable happens in Minecraft is when you die in the nether or End. And you have 100% possible health to run back and pick everything up, includding having your armor re-eqip instantly when you do. And all the mobs in the imediate vicinity of your gear despawned when you died. At least they did as of 1.8 which is the only version I still play.
If that isnt good enough for you, then making this change wont be either. You will find something new to complain about.
As allways, if there is no argument left, attack the guy behind the different opinion.
It happened to me once, and it was not only during a boss fight (Elder) but also a long sail away from my base. In retrospect, I should have built a temporary hut on the island where the fight was going to happen before making the sacrifice. I was way too cocky and confident, and paid for it.
The skill loss is arguably worse than losing the items, at least in some situations.
All that being said, I get why it's in the game and I personally don't have a problem with it. Preparation is key, and although it's not possible to prepare for everything that can kill you having small outposts, portals, or both around your explored areas goes a long way.
TL;DR: I can see why some players really hate the system, as it can certainly be extremely punishing, but in my opinion it's fine the way it is.
(At least until I die in some remote spot swamped by draugr elite and 2-star skeleton archers...
Now to what I really want to say:
Valheim is a game that is from the ground up build the way you experience it right now. The most recent update has tweaked it a little to be even more unforgiving which I can see why some players dont like that.
But I must state that this is the vision of the game, it isnt supposed to be easy. And if you really struggle that way, that means usually that there is something you havent thought of doing prior.
Before Hearth and Home I streamed the game on a new character and I legit, in under an hour (23 minutes to be precise cause I got lucky with boar spawns), had spedrun to the first boss with a bow and flint arrows in hand. It wasnt a very challenging fight, I didnt even have any real armor or good food. But what I had was the experience to know what to do and how to play, which I then started to apply to anything I saw in game.
I avoided trollcaves for a while till I got used to fighting them. I was very wary of tombs and crypts (and even am wary of the latter now cause of the slimes in them). And so I usually do what I need to, now that I know how to do it. As you even said yourself, you now have some stuff prepared which is indeed a good choice.
Now as for the skillloss, I can see how that would be troublesome but as of right now there is no real other penalty to death that would logically fill its shoes. You can get your gear back pretty easily, even if you die again after or during it. It does not despawn (and if it does, it doesnt despawn quickly at all). So while death itself is a bit of a bother, at best youd have to struggle with walking back.
So in turn they give you a skill penalty. A debuff wouldnt work as well and I feel there is no real other way to penalize the player for not staying alive and well. Remember, running is always an option. You should think before engaging a small party in the Black Forest cause a troll could be around the corner :o
The reason why i use mods is simply that the game is EXTEME Painfull to play, painfull in the sense of
"It feels like you play a 90 Year old disabled guy in a Wheelchair"
And even if i nearly never die (nearly only from trees and falling from roofs) i try to make the Devs aware that without Console commands and Mods i would have stopped playing a long time ago. The balance of the game feels more like "What can we do to give the player the feeling of a nice hard slap in the face." In my opinion, make thegame a permadeath game but reduce the Equipment cost by 50% and the XP costs by 90%
Berrybushes and open teleports (cause I cant plant berries but everything else? And I can transport Armor but not the stuff to make it?). You know, things that make sense. Not things that throw the balance out of the way, how Iron Gate envisioned it.
That is why I took issue with what you said before as well in other posts. You played modded since 30 minutes of your playtime. Its great that you have fun, but clearly Valheim wasnt the game you were looking for right? You werent looking for an uncompromising brutal experience. You were looking for a game that was a mix of MC and Dark Souls, more realistic and with good building mechanics. Cant blame you for it, its on my top as well. But you make your own game significantly easier and then still say things like "I am a top player".
No offense: You arent a top player. You are a top player who is doped. If this were a competition and we would have to go by the newest regulations (aka patch without mods) youd lose against me in a second cause you wouldnt know what the best foods are, the best way to fight, the best way to regain stamina quickly and so on and so forth.
In Dark Souls Terms: Youd be a hacker.
