How to keep a server up at all times?
I’m trying to find out how to keep a server up at all times so others can play when not on.
Another friends server is always up even though they are not playong. This allows others on the server to play when they are able to.

Also how do yuo pick stuff up. I was told “E” but that does nothing?

Thanks for any help you can give me 🙂

Dedicated server.

Aim the item, then press E.

Didn’t see an option with that wording, only saw “Communiy server” I believe. Have to look that up online. Will all progress others have made get lost?

GO to your library search for Valheim then look for Valheim Dedicated Server. You will need to install it and run it on your comp then connect to it.

switch your steam library to "tools" and install "valheim dedicated server". explore local files for that entry and there's an official pdf on how to set up a dedicated server on your own pc.

Thanks for your help :) Will anyone's progress be lost if it's switched over to a dedicated server?

Peoples characters (skills&inventory) are persistent between worlds so that wouldn't be lost. I would assume there is a way to copy the world file as well and drop it in to the server but how to do that I do not know.

Since it hasn't been mentioned and OP seems to be new to the concept, I'll just chime in with the fact that if you start a dedicated server it means that you'll have to keep that PC on at all times if you want to have the game world running at all times.

Now if that's fine with you, then great. We used to do that in Minecraft within our clan back in the day. For this though we did rent a server to do the world hosting so none of us had to have a PC running 24/7 for the server.

As for the transfer of progress, yes characters retain their progress and inventory from world to world and the world itself can be moved to be run on the dedicated server if you don't want to start a new world.

Then my OP wasn't read correctly with the responses I got. Example, if 10 people are in a server and Person "A" started the "community server" from the start menu in-game then how do the other 9 people play if player "A" doesn't have the game up and running? Because i've seen it done watching other friends play on youtube. I'm a moderator for them so I know they play without the server owner ever being IN the game.

Since I just bought the game and joined someone's server I can't play in said server unless he is on. This is the problem i'm trying to solve. I want to play but can't

Maybe it's better for you to rent a server, seeing you don't really seem to understand how any of this works. It will save you the hassle of figuring everything out about servers and port forwarding.

Renting will set you back 10 dollars per month, but if you can split that with your friends, it should be pretty bearable.
