Valheim
Valheim Crashing (SOLVED)
----UPDATE: I GOT MY CRASHING FIXED!----

For those that helped out and gave advice about my crashing issues, I really appreciate it. After major tinkering and trying this and that. I found out that a combination of a ton of tweaks seems to have finally resolved all my crashing. I am now 3 days free of any crashes so I am gonna share the link to my Reddit post I done showing what I changed. For some this doesn't seem to help but I would say about 95% of people reporting back to me have all had crashes stop. Seems AMD cpus though are 50/50 with my settings and sadly I don't have an AMD to try to test some work arounds.

If your having crashes, try the settings I did here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/lmz7qu/follow_up_on_a_potential_fix_for_valheim_crashing/

I will update if any crashing returns but I got many long hours in since changing all this, I can host and join other peoples worlds so I think I got my issue resolved but still crossing my fingers!

----Original Post----

Okay...I know this is out there all over Reddit with the issue I am seeing but everything I try doesn't seem to resolve the constant freezing and crashing I am having with this game. I have only been able to play usually 20 minutes in and have seen reboot crashes, and usually complete game freezes where I have to force quit the game.

Oddly I have tried 3 systems and all have the same issue. One system is an i7 7700k and the other 2 are i9 9900k's. All paired with 2080ti's....64gbs or ram and all on water so overheating definitely isn't the issue.

From what I read out there....supposedly there is a fix with some file called valheim.props but in my game folder this doesn't exist. My error log shows a d3d11 error on all 3 systems so apparently I figure this means something is happening game side conflicting with something similar hardware wise in my pcs here at the house.

I have tried putting my gpus at factory and also at overclock, still crashes. I put voltages up on my cpu over clock and then back down to factory settings but still crashes. I have turned off all background apps in windows, still crashes. I allowed the game to start in admin mode....crashes. I even tried booting into safemode with networking, freeze, crash still.

I know this is hitting a small percentage of people out there, oddly after joining up in the official Discord I talked to others with this very problem and it seems our common issue is owning RTX line of cards....all different cpus, ram amounts and types but I gather as far as nvidia people with this issue...its anyone with RTX higher end cards having these crashes happening.

Anyone in here having this issue? Found a work around. All I know its unplayable but definitely not my system causing it, this is the only game I won that crashes and all hardware checks out running fine.

Any help or ideas is seriously appreciated. Looks like a great game walking around but sadly I can't do a thing with it having these issues. Would refund but I have hopes eventually the team on this will take this crash situation on us seriously and pinpoint the problem at some stage.

All I know, I am on a very expensive rig, delidded, fine tuned clocks that been tested and true for over a year....custom water loops....big obsidian 1000d case with so many fans its ridiculous lol. Yet some reason this game became the first I ever seen cause a BSOD on my system. Hopefully it will be fixed, the dev and I chatted and he had it hit his system so he is aware something is going on.

Out of curiosity have you tested your PSU? It sounds like you're familiar with system building (or know someone that is), so underpowering your rig probably isn't the issue. However if you aren't using at least an 800+ watt PSU, consider it.

The reason I ask is that I've seen PSUs "partially fail" under heavy load as they age. They'll be fine until you pass some power-draw threshhold, and then they just throw up and either crash apps, or the system, etc. Because of this weird anomaly I bought a fairly inexpensive PSU tester for my work with clients, and it's found more than one issue on different desktops.

Just tossing it out there for consideration. Your rig sounds like it's using some fairly unique combination of hardware/software (or something just got corrupted along the way), otherwise we'd see thousands of other people out here with similar hardware posting the same. :)

If you're confident the hardware is solid, there's always a system rebuild you could consider. I do my main gaming workstation about once every 3 years or so to keep it fresh.
i have rtx 2080 ti as well but i've not had a single crash, hope this gets fixed for you soon

No worries on the PSU, I got a 1600 watt Platinum in mine, I know overkill but I really went all out on this build last year. Could be worn maybe but as far as I can tell its really only this game having issues, nothing else I do on here seems to have any problems at all. But so far this fix I did with the Studio Drivers is working for me, still no crashes and we just played a few hours tonight. Think I am good, not sure what the cause is but it seems to be finally stable for this game

Really appreciate that. Seems the switch to Nvidia Studio Drivers got the game not crashing for me, guess something crazy going on for some people with this game. But no crashes anymore so I am think I am good now

Well played another 6 hours with a 1 ½ hour and 3 hours continuous play session with no crashes!

When I thought I would give studio a go yesterday morning it was still crashing but now I’ve added your idea for running the .exe high priority it’s fixed so it seems to be a combination of those two things but I’m not willing to test to see if anything else is also a factor; at least not right away as it is just nice to be able to start to enjoy the game again.

As for the exclusive mode/fullscreen & my dedicated server, that’s not a big issue as I’m not crashing now as I only have to do a few extra clicks + extra password input and strangely the stuttering/jittering wasn’t so bad in later sessions but I may see if I can get away with a fps cap/vsync as it seems that despite my system not even coming close to being saturated with a ridicules amount of GPU and CPU headroom the game just starts to struggle a bit without some frame limit in place.

Hard to know if it was the game ready driver or the game causing the issue, I lean towards the game as I played for 20+ hours with those drivers without a problem then the patch ruined it. But that doesn’t mean the patch was the problem as it may have merely exposed a flaw in the drivers... we will probably never know.

Fingers crossed that the crashing has gone away for good, still not got my hopes up too high because I did go many hours without a crash after trying my .Net fix but that turned out to be pure coincidence but more hopeful than I was this morning. Thanks for your contributions in trying to solved this issue.

Let’s just all hope the next patch doesn’t mess it up again!

Sadly my crashing started about 2 days before this last update, so I guess I ended up in that small group before this patch that was already seeing an issue. I hope this sticks with you....so far I haven't crashed either but I haven't been really able to get into the game for long sessions just yet today....so I am still 50/50 what I will see with crashing later today.

I do suspect its a blend of game situation going on and some strange incompatibility with drivers for something that happens during the game. Auto Save for me seems to be what I notice the most as problematic, it still stutters hard when it does that and I could force crashes by doing manually saves before this workaround. Maybe it just taxes things and stuff doesn't get called right yet, seems to me that might be an area the dev should look more into

I've been able to get another couple of big sessions in with a fps cap in place as well so it's running about a smooth as it can and no crash. Hopefully it works for you as well and you can actually get a chance to get back into the game.

Now to try and persuade a friend to buy it as I'm sure it's much better in mp... always a tough sale with him though as he only plays a couple of game religiously but I had just about cracked it when i started crashing ruined that!

Seems my fixes worked. I am on day 3 now with no issues with crashing. Getting max settings with 4k with no lag so I believe I am finally out of the woods with this crash issue. I am gonna update the main post here so maybe others can try what I did and it helps them out.

I used to run Rust servers so I am kind of thinking switch to some Valheim servers in the future....I wanna watch first to see how all these bugs are handled, seems server side there is a ton of headaches still going on but far as personally playing, seems I am good now.

That's good news, a lot of people are going to be thankful. So nice to just be able to play for as long as I want and concentrate on enjoying the game rather than how to minimising the impact of the next crash!

At this stage it's hard to know where things will go, there are major issues when getting to 5 or more players and how they set things up is going to take a complicated rework which they plan on doing but sounds like it won't be any time soon.
Really glad you got your crashing issue solved and can finally enjoy the game!

Me personally if I had any say to help the devs out on this one. Focus first on these crashes and desync bugs with dedicated servers. More content I want but these issues right now are real and spreading so its probably a good idea to put a stop on forward movement, iron these issues out and then that way if they get too ahead they don't have to fully tear things apart due to way too many layers on top of their build.

For me I am crash free now but do I trust it, hellz nah....lol. I am still sketched out when I walk around but so far so good. That is tough though, you love the game but you are so concerned what next turn might do to your system. But I think I am good, figure a week in and I will say I trust it if I stay crash free.

Next stage for me once I know this is fully good, gonna start pondering setting up some public servers that link together for players. I used to run Rust servers but I have big ideas for this so may go that route once I am secure in my own setup first.

Really appreciate that, I am starting to now slowly trust the fix so I think I can sit and now enjoy the game as intended. So far I am still at humble beginnings due to all the issues but I am starting to dig in finally and venture in the world....loving it so far, this by far even with the bugs may end up my newest top favorite of the decade. Finally a survival game not just focused on fluff in the content but actually living an adventure!

Yeah those issues have to be top priority but they probably need to get a few more bodies in to help move forward seeing how the game having blown up the way it has... a large audience hungry for more content is a train they will be hoping they don't miss.

In a few days you'll start to feel more relaxed, yesterday in my final hours of playing I found I wasn't thinking it had crashed with a sense of dread every time it 'paused' for more than 100th of a second but I'm still half expecting something to go wrong.

Fingers crossed they'll get to the point soon that creating a community around the game will be doable... with their new found riches they can bring in a guru to get the servers working asap :steamhappy:

I am starting to relax now, seems 4 days in now with no crashes has me kind of content I think its over with. Thing is that sucks, my tweaks do seem to work for many but not for all. There is just some systems that can't get the overhead needed to recover itself from potential crashes and I am pretty tapped out at this time and stage to help sort what more can be done seeing its working for me now.

The dev and I have chatted, he knows the situation and I passed on my settings in case it helps him pinpoint an area to look at. I am sure he will figure this out because dead honest, even with all the trolls on my posts saying that my system is crap and theirs never crashed, most of them the last day have actually come to me asking for help with their new crash issues lol. KARMA? lol. I don't wish this on anyone but its starting to seem this crash problem is spreading more common than I expected.

Anyways I really appreciate everyone for supporting me and trying to help me sort through this. I welcome all of you to add me as friend here if you wish. Maybe when I get a few servers going you all can pop by and check them out, I am gonna venture down that road next when I see more desync issues also resolved.
I get freezing whenever I rode a boat. So I tried your method, but it still get freezing.
One difference is that there was no message before, but now a pop-up window pops up and a crash appears.
Anyway, I even formatted the computer, but the problem of the game is sure.
I don't know what to do.
It's a waste of my money.
Please tell me how to set up process hackers in more detail. How do you link it with nividia studio?
