Valheim Crashing (SOLVED)
----UPDATE: I GOT MY CRASHING FIXED!----

For those that helped out and gave advice about my crashing issues, I really appreciate it. After major tinkering and trying this and that. I found out that a combination of a ton of tweaks seems to have finally resolved all my crashing. I am now 3 days free of any crashes so I am gonna share the link to my Reddit post I done showing what I changed. For some this doesn't seem to help but I would say about 95% of people reporting back to me have all had crashes stop. Seems AMD cpus though are 50/50 with my settings and sadly I don't have an AMD to try to test some work arounds.

If your having crashes, try the settings I did here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/lmz7qu/follow_up_on_a_potential_fix_for_valheim_crashing/

I will update if any crashing returns but I got many long hours in since changing all this, I can host and join other peoples worlds so I think I got my issue resolved but still crossing my fingers!

----Original Post----

Okay...I know this is out there all over Reddit with the issue I am seeing but everything I try doesn't seem to resolve the constant freezing and crashing I am having with this game. I have only been able to play usually 20 minutes in and have seen reboot crashes, and usually complete game freezes where I have to force quit the game.

Oddly I have tried 3 systems and all have the same issue. One system is an i7 7700k and the other 2 are i9 9900k's. All paired with 2080ti's....64gbs or ram and all on water so overheating definitely isn't the issue.

From what I read out there....supposedly there is a fix with some file called valheim.props but in my game folder this doesn't exist. My error log shows a d3d11 error on all 3 systems so apparently I figure this means something is happening game side conflicting with something similar hardware wise in my pcs here at the house.

I have tried putting my gpus at factory and also at overclock, still crashes. I put voltages up on my cpu over clock and then back down to factory settings but still crashes. I have turned off all background apps in windows, still crashes. I allowed the game to start in admin mode....crashes. I even tried booting into safemode with networking, freeze, crash still.

I know this is hitting a small percentage of people out there, oddly after joining up in the official Discord I talked to others with this very problem and it seems our common issue is owning RTX line of cards....all different cpus, ram amounts and types but I gather as far as nvidia people with this issue...its anyone with RTX higher end cards having these crashes happening.

Anyone in here having this issue? Found a work around. All I know its unplayable but definitely not my system causing it, this is the only game I won that crashes and all hardware checks out running fine.

Any help or ideas is seriously appreciated. Looks like a great game walking around but sadly I can't do a thing with it having these issues. Would refund but I have hopes eventually the team on this will take this crash situation on us seriously and pinpoint the problem at some stage.

Sad to hear of your issue, really fun game. Running smooth as butter on my RTX so dont know what to say but hope you get it going soon and be sure to file a bug report.

Appreciate that, from what I seen of the game...definitely gonna love this once this issue gets ironed out. Filed a bug report...seems this is happening to a lot of us with RTX cards so I am sure there will be a fix or workaround figured out.

It's not just RTX...I have a GTX system that only lets me play for maybe 10 mins. Seems like it's more of an nvidia issue. Could be as easy as certain drivers work and certain ones don't.

I see h/w refs, but have you tried lower graphics settings ? Also, does it do this in new game, before a bunch of landscape changes ? My lowly AMD Ryzen 5 3400G APU (no video card) works fine, but only 20 fps and mostly on low at 1080p,

Reward for most unhelpful response ever.

I fixed my issues with crashing, by reinstalling an older graphics driver, and lowering my resolution, at least for like 2 days, until it started crashing again.

Whats been working for my friend and I is lowering the graphics (1920x1080) until they are able to fix it. also we found that when the dsync issue shows up, restarting the router of the individual causing the issue. Some how it screws up the internet connection, and throttling the speed.

I have a rtx 3080 and ryzen 5600x and the game sometimes crashes but the big problem for me is the games freezing for miliseconds so often and sometimes the game becomes unplayable with low fps with no reason

I have i9 9900k and rtx2080, GF is on i7 and gtx1070, no issues glitches or crashes, using Jan NVidia drivers on windows 10 pro Rev20H2.
This is local server and just us two. I just made a dedicated server, will let you know if it changes.

3060 Ti. Runs perfectly fine for me. I've never had a crash.

I have a Ryzen 5800x, 2080ti and 32gb of ram and I havent had 1 crash yet in about 30 hrs. And yes, it is helpful when people say they arent getting crashes, thats more data that helps troublesoot your problem. Runs smooth as for me, no stutters and running the current drivers so i dont think its caused by rtx cards specifically.

But i'm running on a fresh windows install. Have you tried running driver sweeper to clean out your graphics driver then do a fresh install? Sometimes the drivers go bad when installing new ones over the top of old ones over and over.

I was just about to say people should try rolling back their driver to 461.09, which is the Jan 7th driver. I'm showing improved performance, but still running on lower settings to be safe.

Similar issue here with the game freezing up though not identical but seems to be one of two major crashes going on?

5600x
RTX 3080
16Gb Ram
8 week old up to date Windows 10.
No OC
Never had any issues with other games I’ve played extensively over the last 8 weeks except RD2 (which was a Vulcan issue)

Bought the game and played about 20 hours with no real issues then went to play the next day and it froze up and did so repeatedly within 20 minutes for 3 hours or so. Then it ran ok for about 12 hours after a .NET repair (though I was logging out often to force character and world save) then it started again and now happens at random times.

The only things that changed during it working and not working was a .NET update from MS and the latest patch 0.143.5 from Irongate. Repairing .NET didn’t work and the .NET update did break my rivatuner, though it does eventually run if I want it.

In event viewer I get the following 2 errors (nvlddmkm) and one warning (display);

\Device\Video3
Graphics Exception: ESR 0x526730=0x260009 0x526734=0x0 0x526728=0xf812b60 0x52672c=0x1174

\Device\Video3
Graphics SM Warp Exception on (GPC 4, TPC 4, SM 0): Illegal Instruction Encoding

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Started using a dedicated server in the background to preserve world data and logout often to force saves if I can’t offload valuable stuff sitting in my inventory while waiting for the autosave.

Did some driver reinstalls etc but will try rolling back to see if that helps (will try 461.09)

When did it start happening for you guys?

I actually found a fix potentially. Got the game to finally play straight for 6 hours last night with no crashing at all. Turns out I had to force Exclusive mode and turn off Steam Overlay.

Basically if anyone has crashing give this a try. Right click on the game name itself in Steam and click on Properties. From there disable Steam Overlay by unchecking it and add the following to the LAUNCH OPTIONS line:

-window-mode exclusive -screen-fullscreen

I also went into Nvidia control panel and turned Vsync to "FAST" and put my GPU into performance mode for the game's EXE.

Some reason this completely fixed it so I guess there is some sort of issue with this game and needing to be in Exclusive mode. I thought the Fullscreen option in game was that but apparently its only Windowed Fullscreen.

So I got a full run working last night, already got some builds done. I do occasionally see a micro freeze happen but it usually is random now and recovers. Lasts literally for a millisecond so I suspect that is where I usually see complete freezes but having exclusive mode is helping it to recover now.

I appreciate all the help in this thread, but I think I figured out the issue for my system. So far so good lol

Oh and I might add. I set all graphic settings to MAX on everything and also running at 4K now with well over 60fps....so I guess exclusive mode does the trick. Least for me, may not for others but its worth a shot if you add the settings I put above

I would try the -window-mode exclusive -screen-fullscreen tip, but already refunded. Not buying again, can't get another refund....Devs should post about this problem if they ever want people like me to buy the game again. Again, tyvm for your help !

Yea I am noticing in their Discord this problem is not priority right now lol. I had to dig deep on google about this error and found in another game similar issues and forcing exclusive mode till they patched the issue seemed to fix that game. Seems to have worked on this one.

I did have one crash after this fix but I forgot I was moving a file from a drive to another drive when I booted up....so I cancelled that and no issues again. This game seems to need all the resources it can get...which is odd seeing I have pretty beefy system.

Hopefully this fixes it for a few out there, I see reddit is ate up with this very issue so I just posted as well over there so others can try it out, not sure if it will work or not for everyone but seems to work for my system so far. Devs should look into this, I know its their first game but this probably is not a huge ordeal to fix and honestly kind of important if you got issues like this.
