Is the harpoon useful for anything?

Okay, I got this Abyssal Harpoon and it seems kinda useless. I can throw it at mobs and pull them in. I cannot switch to another weapon without ending the pull so it's not useful for, say, deer. I guess I can pull in things that want to murder me anyway (yoinking trolls with it looks hilarious but isn't useful) or use it on really weak targets like birds.

Things I wish it worked on that it doesn't:
- fish
- dropped items
- cargo crates
- boats (for getting them closer to the shore)
- guck

Is it just a joke item for making trolls fly?

It's nice for moving tamed animals :-)

I think its used for bringing serpents close to the shore so you can kill them and loot them because the loot they drop sinks to the bottom.
