Is there an improved/faster smelter further in or is it better to make a few for getting through the ore faster?

No there aren't any faster smelters, but the first smelter gets obsolete relatively quickly depending on how many players you are(you will get other smelters that refine different kinds of ores). So i wouldn't recommend spending all your resources on smelters. One or two smelters should be good enough.

Build 2 smelters and minimum of 2 coal kilns I had 4 because 2 of them were too slow, if you need portal materials because not enough materials you can just destroy one of the smelters or kilns temporarily.

You do get a blast furnace later on but it only does the higher ores. You will still need the original one for copper etc. Plus if you deconstruct you will get your mats back so making a few to get you through the busy times wont really waste anything.

Once you get into the swamps you can find fire elementals that drop surtling cores and you will be swimming in them in no time.

Cheers guys, I'm setting up a base outside the swamp and was just wondering whether it was worth building more smelters or worth holding off for better.
