Try to imagine you having a LOOONG stick with a pointy end..
Now someone stands so very close to you, invading your personal space, that pointy end is further away then the person in front of you... No try to stick that pointy end into the person invading your personal space..
Not gonna happen, you need to keep your social distance of 1.5mtr to keep him away.
Thats why long sticks in close combat sucks balls, make sure they dont invade your personal space, or they start facehugging you, and you just look dumb with you're long pointy stick.
Stick them up before they invade your personal space, not afterwards, sticking a long hard pointy thing into someone short range inside personal space is called intire different, and often done in bedrooms...
From your comment I don't think you've used the spear in the game. It has less range than the knife. Outside of throwing it is poorly designed. It SHOULD work the way you posted (i.e. good at longer range than an axe or sword) but nope, it's throwable knife.
As for the bow, I realize the aim definitely gets better as your skill increases
It doesn't stab down very well though. Having the high ground is a recipe for disaster in combat, especially against boars, etc. Now I always circle to attack from downhill
If you're on a slope trying to hit Necks you're in for a disappointment, because they'll nibble on your kneecaps while you can't hit em x)
But I definitely see a lot around combat being improved somewhere down the road so I don't worry too much about it, works for most enemies after all so far.
Would also be neat if you could deliver weaker stabs with it while blocking, much like in Monster Hunter.
The issue with spears in Valheim is the grip. Spears were NOT help in this weird overhand fashion that only lets you stab downward. That's a weird fantasy troupe that likely came about from misinterpreting artwork and confusing the spear with the Roman pilum. They were held resting on your forearm and tucked under the arm. This allowed you to make both long thrusts and have lateral control of the weapon. Many spears were also bladed and could deliver some pretty nasty slashing attacks. It's also a pretty simple matter to choke up on a spear and use it up close.
The HEMA/History enthusiast in me dies a bit every time I see someone using a spear in Valheim.
plus: you can hit + block in time alost against every opponent, fastest hit recovery
minus: durability is meh,
second minus: multihit conus is LOW
