Windmill Location
Read that the windmill is best on the plains where there is a lot of wind. I have a small port harbor nearby with a protected inlet and was wondering if that would be a viable location since there is generally always wind by the water. Maybe even build it on a raised platform to catch the higher velocity up high.

What say you fellow Vikings?

Wind is the same speed up high or down low (Moder power does nothing for windmills). You just need to have no obstructions. The meadows work just as well as the plains for that and its safer to set up a big base in the meadows and just a small farm in the plains.

Depending on location, you might want to make a raised earth or stone pillar(s) base to raise the windmill above blocking structures and (some) terrain obstructions.

Thanks! I built a wood platform but it needed solid ground so I hollowed out the center, raised the earth and built it there using the wood foundation to build a palisade of protective walls around it. I've cleared much of the woods around my base so that it is fairly wide open out to my small port inlet.

I like building a farm with windmill on an island in Plains. If it is offshore far enough you won't see any Plains mobs except once in a great while a skeeter will catch the wind or something and show up.

heard its great for keeling skeeters but would I have to transport everything up to the artisan table to get it built? The plains is rather faraway on this world unfortunately.

No, all you need is to temporarily build a level 1 workbench, then an artisan table, and then the windmill. After windmill is built, deconstruct the artisan table and, if need be, the workbench. I try to use a small island so that two base structures can provide anti-spawn protection (one is windmill, other is either workbench or portal).

PS: plus side is not only no base raids there but you can control the windspeed the windmill operates at by portalling(or sailing) away during high winds. Windmill uses the last speed while player is present for calculating processing speed until you show up again.

[edit] I'd still put the windmill up on an earthen pillar to help you handle one particular non-base raid you can still get there.

TBH, I just put mills wherever they're convenient for me. Never takes too long for the flour to be done.

Put stone blocks under it.

I made a large platform of windmills on grausten spikes at the beginning of the ashlands waters, always some good wind there.
