Single Player or Co-op
Hi guys
Was considering this game, but is it fun and doable as a single player (I am sad and have no friends) or do you really need to play it as co-op. I might consider another game if it's really leaning towards co-op.
Thoughts?

I have had 100's of hours of fun playing solo. If you do buy, try it first on default settings until you know the game and know what you like doing and only then change the settings.

Agreed. I haven't solo'd the newest updates, which sound brutal, but I had a blast. It's hard, but it can all be mitigated by proper planning and strategies. Preparation...

At this point i think i can call myself a veteran. Imho valheim is perfectly solo-able. If it's fun? Fun is subjective, the learning curve is steep and remorseless. Mistakes might cost you a lot of time. High risk, high reward since victories after hard fought battles and outwitting the enemies give a good kick and are very satisfying.
If you enjoy a good challange and you can handle defeat or loss you will enjoy it. Also it's not a sprint, it's a marathon and preparation is key. Progress takes quite a lot of time solo so you need to commit.
If you find the default setting too brutal you can always change the world modifiers mid playthru. In the steam description i think the 4th word is "brutal". They aren't joking, especially if you're new.

It is very fun both as a singleplayer and multiplayer game. Personally, I prefer co-op with some buddies, but singleplayer is also a blast.

Challenge accepted. I play the odd rogue like so feelings of failure and self loathing are normal fun times in a game for me ;-)
Thanks for responding positively guys I'll give it a go while it's on sale and see how it goes

Good luck mate and have fun! Remember, dont rush. Mind your stamina, if you run out mid fight or get caught with you pants down after sprinting to 0 you're probably dead.

Once you play some, do you think you can come back here and share your thoughts? Id be curious to hear.

Thanks for the advice... sure no problem... I'll let you know. Out of curiosity, what's your interest?

OK initial thoughts as requested.
Downloaded and thought I'll have a quick 10 mins to see... played 2 hours so that's a good sign. I'm not gonna look at guides til I've played way longer so you guys were right it's a steep learning curve. Died several times... to a falling log... doh! and skeletons, but it's not too punishing initially.

Beat the first boss, struggled with the building system until I got the hang of the snapping system and starting to mine in the black forest... now need to build a smelter.

Yeah it's good so far (got 4 hrs in) loads to keep me interested. Wise words to take it slow - it's not quite the rapid game I thought it was but hugely positive first impressions and I can see me playing a good few hours on this one.
Cheers guys

Interest? As in? What do you mean?

Im glad you're enjoying it! Yeah solo valheim for the 1st you cant rly rush. Nor I think you would be able to. Not without looking up some guides or something.
Imho the 1st playthru is the best one and best enjoyed at your own pace discovering things on your own. Dying to a log - we've all been there mate xD that's how you learn.
Few good hours? Hehe... well the game tends to suck you in. I mean Ive over 1400 hours and im not even THAT deep in compared to others. I saw people with over 2k and 4k hours played. There is something about this game that is able to draw people in for hours on end. My guess is building epic halls and long houses and castles and towers and everything in between is something you can spend uncountable hours on.

Anyway, you keep enjoying the game and welcome to Valheim! May the All-father guide you in your travels.

Friendly advise.
Be prepared that each boss will have a new mechanic that you have to learn and adapt to.
The first boss is kinda a tutorial one, 2nd will be much much harder if you dont check ahead and see what it can do.

The game gets exponentially harder each biome imo. Mistlands is where I stop having fun and mods help a lot.
Bloodhawk Oct 26, 2024 @ 8:54pm
Co-op is definitely more fun and I think it's the intended way to play the game, but the game is pretty long and it'll probably be difficult to find a group of people who'll stick it out the whole way. Solo is a totally fine way to play, just expect it to be a a fair bit more difficult.

Personally I quite disagree. At least for me the later there is the more tools you have and the more options there are in fights. Be it forsaken powers, weapons, meads, armor types etc. Mistlands... Well there some fun to be had there but to me it's the most annoying, tedious and frustrating biome to explore. I have to say tho, they give us my most favourite builing material, black marble.
