Do destroyed portals give back materials?

I was setting up an outpost and 2 of my portals got destroyed. I assume they got destroyed, they aren't there anymore. The materials are also not there. Is this correct? Shouldn't I get the materials back?

Resources sitting around on the ground will despawn after a bit if not within range of a work bench.

yes they do, I use this to just carry portal materials around with me when exploring or gathering supplies and just link it back to a portal in my warehouse when I need to refuel / sleep.
