how do you break down the central fortress tower in Ashlands?

I keep smacking it with my battering ram, but it's doing nothing. What am i missing?

Hmm my black metal pickaxe had no effect and the battering ram took down the door in the inner tower quite fast.

I think the battering ram has to be charged with wood (like a fire) for it to break the doors effectively. Other than that, keep at it? they are rather sturdy doors but shouldn't take more than a minute

Battering Ram is the only way to break down the doors, that I know of.

Add some wood, grab onto it, destroy.

Yes the battering ram has to be powered. Summoned trolls can also damage the central keep walls, though that takes a bit of time and dodgeing the incoming swings (as in the troll will try to kill you).

I did the same bloody thing when I was first taking on a Fortress!

Pro tip...don't destroy the outer doors and you have a fairly safe base area.

I destroyed the outer door and replaced with flametal doors. It is fairly durable, especially if you use it as a base and all the craft stations reduce the spawn,

Another way inside a fortress is by building a flight of stairs slightly out of range of the ballistas. Shoot said ballistas from afar using the staff of embers, aim for the spawners inside the courtyard, kill the warlocks and... well everything else inside. Climb over the wall using another set of stairs and viola. You got yourself a night indestructible fortress you can call your own. Though you would still need a battering ram to get into the keep.
