Building question
So I'm just getting back into the game since before mistlands hit. Was wondering. Are iron wood beams still the best for structural support?

afaik yes. there are new flametal pillars but so far I haven't found a need for them apart from decorative purposes. I think they provide the same support as wood iron beams/poles.

Since mistlands we can build metal walls of copper, decorative and with the same support that iron has (but as a 2x2 wall).

And since ashlands there is a stonelike pillar the size of a regular pole.

Ty much. Was curious mainly because i did this nonsense when plains was still endgame. And yes, I had WAY too much time on my hands. The interior is fully decorated too. No use for it at the time, but I even put in a full dining hall. Took me a good 3 days just to get the exterior done with all the iron beams supporting that massive amount of stone.

Interesting. Yes, iron still rocks for building tall. The flametal beams, copper screens and flametal doors are about it, apart from black marble which is the strongest stone.

Yeah, I can't wait to start using that. It looks amazing, and has more build pieces. Might make a dark castle this time. Of course in a decent spot in mistlands. All that fog will make it look amazing. Will have to place the torches in just the right spots for maximum effect.

the neat thing about the black marble I like especially is that it all seems to share the same texture plane, so no matter which way you rotate a piece or what combination of pieces you use, you get that cool, shiny marble effect without interruption save the piece seams.

Currently playing two games and in the most recent seed started a fortress right in front of the Queen's lair (we share an open space between two lakes) which will take a while to complete since I'm hollowing out a mountain, but yes, black marble rocks!

Absolutely! I never really took to stone much and grausten is, well, cement so yeah, love black marble.

Flametal pillars can be placed directly on lava for support which is nice if you want to build a bridge. I tested it and it seems to have the exact same stability as wood iron beams.

Didn't know that! Thanks! Opens up a whole new aspect of building. Love being never too old to learn.

Building with stone and iron wood beams, you will get higher structurally using 2 meter high pillars vs the 1 meter high stone block. Each piece you stack counts as one color weaker as you go up.

The 2x2 iron cage walls are way more structural support than iron wood beams, but they cost a lot more iron.
~ (Edit) Iron wood beams are the same as cage walls. The cage walls let you build higher, until the game calculates. Seems it can take like 10 minutes before stuff starts to break.

Modded creative builds, I use Odin Architect "thin iron pole"... I use them like rebar (totally hidden in wood or stone pieces.

Just ran a test after reading this (Game is still open)

Flametal and Wood Iron can both go 22 high with pillars, and 14 beams out.

One difference, is if you build quickly, Flametal doesn't break immediately, so you have options of adding another piece to it, to give it support, before it breaks.

I was able to add 36 beams to an unsupported section of Flametal beams before the 15th in the row broke and started making the rest collapse.

So they build the same height, but it appears as if Flametal is actually more durable.

Yes. The cage walls are like that as well. It takes several minutes for them to break just like the Flametal beams.
