Haven't played latest update.
Its mainly a factor of speed- if youre in a storm with heavy seas slow down to speed 2. In my experience that should be safe. If you get concerns at speed 2 then slow to speed 1.
Note- dont exceed speed 1 in a longship if you're transporting a lox unless the sea is glass-smooth, no waves at all. Otherwise your ship will be taking 20 damage every 5-10 seconds, and will have to stop for repairs frequently and every time you do the lox will probably aggro on something and jump off to fight it and it becomes a hassle. (and give swamps a wiiiide berth so the lox doesnt spot an ocean-going leech and jump off far from land). If the sea IS glass smooth then you can speed up.
The random 10 damage during normal sailing is also why its risky to transport tame boars on a longship- the damage can transmit to the pigs and kill them. (plus the whole aggroing on something and jumping off the boat thing). Far better to use a harpoon to tow them behind the ship.
You might need to look out for serpents in storms, and your boat may also have been previously damaged.
The closest this I ever did was sailing full sails, tailwind, from the ocen to a blackforest beach and somehow parked my karve behind a tree.
Those waves were so huge, I could bet even at speed 1 the boat would have flipped over.
I play immersive+, then I am dying often, losing my full inventory and all my stats... so I am used to that. Normal people will rage quit, :)
Addition of new pain: while in a storm far from the coast (I was travelling in the vegvisir direction for the boss spawn... nothing fancy), stop the boat, wait the long minutes until the storm ends...
