The workbench requirement is probably a placeholder for something wrll get further along in the game development. It seems silly but it's not really a problem.
I'd like to see something like certain structures adding to our base boundary, such as foundation supports, crafting stations, wards, etc.
My friend and I tend to make some kind of a village, with different buildings serving different purpose. We have our central building, where we sleep, cook our meat and have our initial workbench. A bit further, we have our forge, with a workbench also. After all, it's a forge, so it is pretty logic to have a workbench also. On the other side on our main building, this is our harbor, with a deck and a little shed with another workbench. Ship need maintenance, so a workbench in the harbor fit in. Further outside our wall, we have our farm, which have some kind of a barn in the middle, with a workbench of course, and our boars enclosure and different crop all around. In every farm in the world, you'll find in a corner a bench with some tools.
If you plan carefully your base, you build different buildings for different purpose, just so that each workbench radius slightly overlap. That way, you got a pretty big village, all cover up with workbench while still making sense thematically.
maybe if there was diffrent size and skin on the workbence then we can talk. but the current workbence dont fit inside the kitchen in a good way.
got the same problem whit my "palisad wall" I had the stupid ide to build a watch tower over the workbence but that sort of looks at part odd.
Whilst true, that still does not answer his question as to why the base game is that way.
