Pulling the cart, stairs, raising the ground and lowering the ground
Quick Recap. I spent a lot of time building a road from the coast to my main base. I learned from another project that if you have more than 1 stair you can't pull up the cart. That's totally fine.

Here is the problem though. You can't lower the ground after a certain level so you have build stairs.

So I did my best possible. Used only on stair and one flat tile and filled my cart to the brim with iron scraps. Well, you can't pull the cart not even over only one staircase.

One thing needs to change. Here are my suggestions.

1. Change the cart in such a way that it is easier to pull on wood/stone so that pulling the cart over stairs is possible

2. Change the Raising/Lowering ground mechanic. As far as i understand there is a maximum level you can raise or lower the ground after that the game just refuses. Uncapping that maximum would do wonders. (My initial idea was to carve a canal to my house but that is not possible.) -> This would my preferred solution since I want to build a road to world border and raising the ground over the see is tedious not fun when there is a maximum level I can raise it.

3. Introduce a new skill. Call it Strenght/Cart Pulling or whatever. Should give the player the ability to pull carts steeper and steeper.

4. Mounts. I think I've seen this going around and it would be cool if we could use wolves, hogs or any other animal to pull the cart. -> This is probably the hardest one to implement.

That's basically it. If you have any suggestions as well just comment.

you don't have to use stairs :) You can make a ramp from roof tiles, or other ways.
If you had a pic or two of the problem you are trying to solve, it may help.
There are videos of a lot of crazed, inebriated vikings riding the cart down hills or whatnot... maybe some of those will have a kernel of practical design in them to go along with the fun.

Those all seem like good suggestions.

I haven't tried stairs, but I think the problem is simply momentum. Cart movement is based on weight physics, so you need a running start to make it up an incline, and will rapidly lose speed.

I get around that by using a zigzag switchback path going up hills. I'll sprint up at a bit of an angle, then level off and walk to regain stamina, and repeat as many times as needed.

But still, I'd love to see some enhancements to the cart system, such as stone/paved path reducing weigjt drag by 50%.

Roof tiles have worked well enough for me so far. Just keep walking when you run out of stamina and you shouldn't slide backwards very much if at all. And since they're roof tiles they won't rot in the rain. I will agree though, terraforming could use some love. Hopefully they'll look into it soon, as building roads/paths is actually fun in this game.

Thx mate. Does it work when you have a full cart of iron scraps?

Well, after doing some testing it looks like ~1500 weight is about the max you can get away with using the ramp. I piled in close to 3k weight with stuff I had at my base (Iron/Copper/Tin bars + stacks of fine wood + stone stacks) and I dropped it by about 500 each attempt and at 1500 weight I could go up the ramp.

When we tested the ramp in screenshot we used 4 dragon eggs (I think they are 200 each) and some other random stuff so we were prob sitting at around 1200 weight. Solo I had been using it with wood and stone which are only 100 a stack so I guess I never hit that 1500 limit.

Tried with ~1750 and you could get a bit of momentum at an angle but it was way too much hassle, and you slowly slide backwards even while trying to walk forward when you run out of stamina.

Pickaxing leveled ground should lower it to the next nearest lower level, not take a big chunk out so you have to start leveling with the hoe again

What we need is a Drawbridge. :)

So, you can definitely go over the limit but you will need to put a staircase than a flat tile, better two, followed up by another staircase.

did you try to RUN up the slope that you slid down? (I have done minimal cart tests, so I don't know if you even can run). I have mostly just made extra foot-trips to haul my booty.

I too am an avid builder of Roads.

When I started, from my tiny shack on top of a mountain, I carved a pathway winding down to the near stream of water, built a bridge that evolved into a Dock, built more roads leading into the Black Forrest towards the Copper nodes I wanted, restored a resting home with another bridge halfway between the my main camp and the copper complete with a mostly-leveled dirt road.

Then I realized the Map and MiniMap do not update these events, sadly.

Then I realized that instead of dragging the Cart to and fro with goods, I could just carry the mats for a Warp Gate, create a crafting table, build said Warp Gate. Mass cut logs/stone and warp them out.

And the Metals? Well, I just run those by foot with Eikthyrs blessing and Tasty Mead (+300% Stam Regen, -50%HP Regen, 10sec). It's actually faster than the boat since I mostly already have most of the foliage cut out to make pathways to run and jump through.

The cart is a great idea, but it's a hinderance unto itself.
Roads paved or unpaved offer no utility other than pure aesthetics.
There are no work-animals to haul it.
Warping is Faster.

Maybe if we had Peasants that used the Cart to gather for us, and they then would in turn use the Roads we paved to return the goods to the nearest Road-Connected Keep.

But until then, the cart is a waste of time.

did you try to elevate the cart?

set cart somewhere, use hoe to build pillar under cart, get it to the height you want and just connect this "pillar" with the land you want to enter

move cart, remove pillar with pickaxe and move on

it's a bit stone costy tho

Teamwork helps.
Have someone pull the cart, harpoon them, and pull them around with the cart.

It'd be nice to have some working animals to help.

sounds like interesting idea for mod ;D

with mods we can order lox to "follow", now just need mod to attach cart to lox

Pulling the cart up the stairs is doable. For me the absolute weight limit is around 1600. And I build two staircases next to each other so I have enough room to zig zag left to right up the stairs. It's not possible to go in a straight line upwards with so much weight. You can use this zig zag method to carry the cart up any steep incline.

Cranes: when?

Elevators: must
