If I start a new world with the same character does it reset stats an inventory?

very new to this game and have only played on a friends world with my character, if I was to start my own would it erase my characters stats and items?

No, you keep everything.

Characters and worlds are separate. You can load you your characters inventory in one world and unload in another world. Some people do this just to get around the portal restriction on ore and ingots.

Remember though that depending on what you have you might not be able to repair it in your world. For example let's say you have bronze or iron gear then you will be able to use it in a new world until it breaks. And then you will have to put it away cos you won't have a forge yet to repair it.

Welcome to the beauty of this game, use as many seeds as you want each is a new world and then just go to each for various reason like a mining world or boss world kills bosses on separate world to save your own main world log in and log out go back to your own world taking with you what you have . Each seed appears at your start game page.
