best way to survive burial crypts?
I know. It's on the second area, but I don't seem to do well in the burial chambers and I need whatever is in there to build a smelter to progress. What is the best weapon to use in those? I have been using spear but now I'm reading that they're not that good? Is a flint knife good? Anything else I can make at my level? I have a shield. Thanks a lot.

Club works well vs skeletons. Really not that difficult. Just keep your shield up when opening a new door. If there's too many close it or if you need healing. If there's a spawner take it out fast.

Club/Mace and Shield. Or use the Stagbreaker

isn't stagbreaker something I can't get yet? I've only killed the first boss. I don't think I can make a mace either.

Round shield and axe, hold up your shield a moment before the skeletons attack to parry and causing them to stumble for a bonus damage when you strike. If there are more than 1 and you don't have adequate armour then lure them into the tight corridors to fight one on one or back towards a door and close the door after luring one skeleton through. The same concept with ghosts except its much harder to see their attack to parry.

edit* a flint axe

Weapons: Spears are good weapons, just not against skeletons. Skeletons are resistant to piercing damage. Weapons that do blunt damage are best against skeletons, so clubs and hammers.

Slashing damage is currently the worst in the game, as no enemy in the game has a weakness to slashing damage.

Shield: Tower shields are great if you have someone with you. When I am solo I prefer round shields. Round shields allow you to time your block with an enemy's swing to parry, which will temporarily stun an enemy allowing you time to swing with needing to worry about getting hit.

The real key to combat is to a) learn when it is safe to swing and b) learn how to position yourself and the enemies. 1-on-1 combat is generally very easy, but also very rare.

Bonus: Get a cauldron and a fermenter and make some mead. Even the most basic minor healing potion can make a huge difference in a bad situation, and has some pretty easy to find ingredients:

10 Honey
5 Blueberries
10 Raspberries
1 Dandelion

You can craft it after killing the first boss. I used it in the Burial Chambers of the Black Forest

I am not good with fighting. All the above suggestions are great - but would not have worked for me. Was sooo scared to go into burial chambers with my "crude weapons". Until I got the stagbreaker (cut down some Pine in the black forrest - that should unlock the recipe).

Once I had the stagbreaker, here is the strategy I used: open a door and see if there is a skeleton or ghost or whatever. If yes and those creatures come toward you, quickly close door. Then use the stagbreaker in front of door. The damage goes through the door and after 2-3 hits, the skeletons and whatever is in it dies (you'll see number indicators).

This helped me get through the burial chambers until I had better weapons and better armor. Now I just casually stroll through and "demolish" what's in my way :).

Also, round shield and ax were my best friends. Knife/spear etc did not really help me at the beginning.

Hope this helps - and good luck!

chop down a pine tree in the black forest and collect the wood to unlock the stagbreaker recipe

Any blunt weapon is good but I clear burial chambers with the first spear you can make and round shield all the time. Learn the timing for a parry and the spear still does decent damage even though the skeletons resist piercing damage. The club will work just fine, too, and you can just block instead of worrying about timing a parry. I find most smaller dungeons are all about blocking since there's often no room to dodge. Don't be afraid to back up to the entrance and fight there until you get better at combat. They'll follow you and it gives you room to move, or exit if you're nearly dead. You can rest up outside and come back in at full health for another go. Make sure you've got decent food and have the rested buff before you go in and you should be fine.

Also, you only really need 5 cores. You can build the kiln, make a bunch of coal, then dismantle it and build the smelter from the same materials since you get 100% back if it's fully repaired when you dismantle it. You can also burn meat for coal, which is a bit silly but it's another option to obtain coal if you don't want to keep taking your kiln and smelters apart. These methods aren't the fastest or most convenient, but if you're having that much trouble underground it might be a better option until you get better at dealing with the skeletons.

Get your stealth way up so you can get the sneak attack. You should be doing that a lot anyway.

My first Burial Chambers were all flint axe and tower shield. I'd always pop a fire right at the entrance to be sure to be well rested (and dry if it rained on the way).
I went in all paranoid, shield always up and listening to the noises.
After 2 or 3 you get more assurance.
Died only once in there. I slid down a not ramp and was mauled by three skeletons, one of which one star. The only time I ever had a map where there was a proper ramp on one side and a drop on the other.

As Macdallain said, once you get 5 cores you have enough to start smelting and prepare at least the armor to ensure you last longer if you make a mistake.

Also, don't make the same mistake as me and make a cart early on, this saves you days of work when mining (or lumbering).

Make the starter club, it cost 6 wood, and its upgraded with bone and skelly bois takes extra dmg from blunt.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys! Will try tonight and see how it goes.

Don't forget to be well fed, nothing hurts more than lacking stamina in crucial moments.
I you don't already do so, cook meat and neck tail over a campfire, then eat berry and you're good to go.
