Tree seed drop rate
I've run a tree farm for several rounds now, and the drop rate for tree seeds seems off to me. For a while, I was getting what seemed like reasonable drop rates of all varieties- sometimes more, sometimes less that 100% replacement of what I chopped down, but sometimes a LOT more or less.

This last round, I wound up with dozens of birch and fir, just a few beech, and zero oak. That last part is what really hurt. Until now, starting with 10-12 oak, I was always getting at least a few seeds. Now I've got to go look for some wild ones again.

Have I just had some bad luck, or have the drop rates been rejiggered? Anyone know how that works?

It's very variable, with a random number of items dropping from each tree and a random amount of those items being seeds, so it could be anything from zero to six seeds, with zero being way more likely. I believe the odds are intentionally tuned to not fully replace the trees over time, so that logging in the wild is always necessary.

I agree with Mharr's stated belief. I would guess that the devs didn't plan on people planting trees for a tree farm function but as a decorative one. Otherwise, they'd drop a constant number of seeds like onions or barley.

The current asymmetric behaviour of cultivated Vs wild trees isn't great.

I'd like wild saplings to gradually grow into mature trees when not within a given radius of another mature tree.

You could then have wild saplings randomly spawn in forested areas (again restricted by the number of nearby saplings).

I mean it's all videogame nonsense whatever route they take because growing a tree should take tens of thousands of days.

Nordic magic. :-)

Sounds like it's about what I figured. RNG luck. The food seeds are at a reliable rate, but the trees are... whatever. Spin the wheel, see what you get. Feels way too random for the tree seeds, and the food seeds feel wrong too, 3 at a time like clockwork.

I guess I just had a run of bad luck. around 15 oak trees, and not a single seed.

I had a good run of oak but then the ones I planted seemed to have a much lower drop rate for seeds.

As I sailed around I would stop whenever I saw an oak tree and "wild" oaks were giving me seeds at the better rate. If there were two trees in a meadow area, one was bound to drop some seeds. No where near the rate of the planted ones.

This really could be intentional if they want them used more for decoration than mega finewood factories.

That thought crossed my mind too. I don't pay close attention to updates and changes, but I almost wondered if the drop rates had been changed, for the kind of reason you mention. An Oak Tree farm would be a bonanza, and you could do it if you always got seeds at above replacement rate.

As an aside, do you really use that much fine wood?

Pine cone drop rate is a bit low too I find. They should probably tweak some of the Tree seed drop rates again (if they haven't already)

I have never been able to keep a an area sustained with trees consistently without supplementing my plantings with seeds gained from harvesting "wild" trees.

I don't think the drop rate is sufficient to do this.

From the patch notes: 2021/10/04 v 0.203.10

Acorn & Birch seed drop rate increased

For birch, the first value for Meadows variant 1 and second value is for Meadows variant 2 and Plains
Birch seeds: Average drop from 0.15/0.1 to 0.5/0.38
Birch resin: Average drop from 0.3/0.2 to 0.25/0.19
Birch feathers: Average drop from 0 to 0.25/0.19
Oak acorn: Average drop from 0.1 to 1.0
Oak resin: Average drop from 0 to 1.25
Oak feathers: Average drop from 0 to 0.5

Which sounds like replacement levels for acorns on average meaning you're likely to roll snake eyes at some point and run out of trees unless you start with hundreds.

No, but I like the look of the oaks- I'm going to have to farm some wild ones if I want to place any for looks. And they give the most regular wood when farming.
