Disappearing silver vein

I was zeroing in on a silver vein, standing in a pit with the wishbone strobing like I was right on top of some silver, but I couldn't find it. Had to go to work, left things there. When I went back to the game later, the wishbone wasn't strobing any more, like it does once you've actually hit the thing you're looking for. But... no silver. I've dug a pit, deep and wide, looking in every direction for the silver I supposedly found.

Is this just a thing that happens?

I've never had it happen in 1100+ hours but i feel like I remember one of the devs talking about how it may be / may have previously been bugged in some scenarios.

Guess I've just got to dig out a bit more. it's weird. This is my first time in the biome, but the 7th vein I've found, so I DO know what I'm supposed to see...

Any chance you found a pile of bones while you were digging? There are graves that the wishbone also picks up. You'll usually find a skeleton buried and a silver necklace I believe.

The problem I've had when finding these is that the wishbone won't stop pulsing until you relog. Also, it can be pretty easy to pick up the bones/necklace without noticing if you're focused on finding a silver vein.

I had something similar happen when I unequipped the wishbone after finding a silver vein's location but without actually uncovering it.

At the time, I suspected that the veins don't actually spawn until we uncover it by breaking through the rock at that spot/depth.

After reequipping the Wishbone, I found that the nearest silver vein was some distance away.

Since then, I always make sure to genuinely uncover, and hit, silver veins before unequipping the Wishbone or leaving the area.

THAT'S what it was. There WAS a full skeleton there, the only such I've seen so far. Okay, I knew the wishbone picked up other things, I just didn't realize that was it.

I'm pretty sure the veins are there whether you detect them with the wishbone or not. I've seen the tip of one poking out on the surface, where you could just run across it without even having the wishbone, and there's a youtube video of the same thing out there.

Hmm. I've seen two silver veins sticking out of the ground before, but I think that I had the wishbone equipped both times. Definitely equipped for one of the two times. <shrug>

Before I got the wishbone, and knew what the deal was with silver mining, I got frustrated and used the freefly command to try to find the next metal, which I thought was in the mountain biome. I never found anything besides obsidian, which I couldn't mine at the time, cuz I also didn't know about the odd way that iron was gained then either.

Either the silver veins weren't there yet, or I failed to find the veins that were there. I can't say for certain which it was.

This might or might not be an answer, but small mountain biomes might not have any silver to begin with. The first one I found was like that. I was all over it with the wishbone, and nada.

Oh, no, after getting/using the Wishbone, that mountain range had a bunch of veins. At least 5.

The wishbone has absolutely no influence on whether or not silver exist in any given location. It only allows you to find it when it's hidden.

little tip when mining Silver. I Dig all the way around the vien first. Once you start hitting therock/Silver it will attract and mobs in the area. The pit around the vien makes it harder for the wolves to sneak up on you and you can use the pit walls and Silver vien as cover from the Drakes while you swap in your weapons.

I accidentally figured that out already. I could even handle 'you are being hunted' with a deep ditch and a teleporter behind me. Trench warfare ftw.

Wishbone can find things in more places that just the mountain biome btw. And yes the never ending ding happens if it is a pit of bones.
