Question about no build cost?
Its not that I want to play that way, but sometimes its not the cost its, the I have to place a workbench here in order to build just to get rid of it later. I will still do my best to make sure I have what I need, which also sucks because that means if i play that way, all the stone and wood I have gathered will not leave my chests.

But I just do not know even if I put on that option like building a bigger floor, but I am one tile away from having to to put down yet another workbench, which at times gets in the way.
but I want it to use it some of the wood and stone I have gathered. If I use no build cost do I need a work bench?

Or will it just go because I know if I just put workbenches everywhere nothing can spawn. SO there is that.

Yes, you will still have to build a workbench/stonecutter/forge/blackforge when playing with the no build cost option on. All this setting does is let you build things with the hammer(not including weapons, armor, food......etc) after you have "touched" the building ingredients.

If you use the world modifier "No Build Cost" then you do not need a workbench, you can build anywhere for free, you still need to learn the recipes first.

If you use the console debug command "B" you also get access to all recipes in addition to the above.

Same goes if you use the console debug command "B".

Hmm weird, I have used "setkey nobuildcost" before and you do have to build a workbench. Was this changed?

I am not familiar with that command, so I do not know how that works.
However the console debug command "B"(devcommands ---> Debugmode ---> B) has always worked as I described.
The world modifier, set in the main menu before you load into the world, is something that is new that has been added with Ashlands I believe, or after Mistlands at least.

Thanks guts its kind of a shame, that you can not up the workbench/stonecutters radius in world options, again sometimes I guess it depends on what you build, but just to bigger bases just to get rid of them sucks but you have to have them.

But I also know it effects spawning, which also sucks, like a wall means nothing, in a way, something can spawn right next to it but a workbench, I am free and clear for a little bit.

But is what it is, thanks for answears

I play with no-build-cost "on"
You still do need to build workbenches.
One of the greatest reasons for using this option is re-building things that you don't like and you don't have to go around collecting all the materials back up. In fact, I don't hesitate to destroy and re-build even giant structures if I don't like how it is turning out.
If you are more into the building aspect of the game, this is a great option. Grinding for wood and stone is cute but after a few hundred hours of that, I'm good.

I highly recommend using no-build-cost because it takes all the cheat you could accidentally do to your character and progression that you could by using the dev command you toggle by pressing B while debugmode is on.

No Build Cost is the one you get when you choose the option in the settings menu. It restricts you to only be able to build anything you already know in the building hammer menu and removes the 'hassle' of having to collect materials or clean up debris.

The original you get with pressing B in debugmode is No Cost. This one is much more intrusive and easier to ruin the sense of progression and spoil a lot of things. It will show you all the patterns in all the benches, which will also go away when you turn off the code. Until you start building and demolishing because this way of building does leaves debris you could accidentally pick up and start unlocking things way ahead of your characters progression.
You can always use the no cost option to build what you want and then dump the resources you would have used into the obliterator (leave the resulting coal inside), sail it out into deep water and dump it over board, or use a portal to go to the top of a mountain and chuck it over the side.

Using setkey is more powerful and versatile, the options are nobuildcost, nocraftcost, noworkbench, allpiecesunlocked, allrecipesunlocked & dungeonbuild. Mix and match as required.
