You can keep breaking pots. The pots can have iron, first hand experience. You do not need very many.
I would say yes to sailing again. Just get it overwith in a much more viking way than knowing what to do before you go. If you want to do it normal, and you have not known how to do it before hand, then i think the normal progression the devs are looking for, is minimum a round trip. I mean you made it this far already!! The biggest nerf to AL was the interwebs. That trip back should be the last since you can build a stone portal on the "mainland" Two stone portals connected and your all set. Here I am giving advice I hope you dont read.....
Of course, frantically cutting trees and logs only provides only ashwood and draws in countless mobs, so I end up spending the night huddled in some nook in a rock, or some such, waiting for light so that at least I don't have to fight too many starred mobs while I search for two wood.
