Mistlands - Initial Gear Suggestions
Hey, folks.

I thought I compile a list of gear that any Plains veteran should be able to assemble, so they can get Mistlands started with confidence.

I know I'm quite late for that, but there's still quite a lot of players out there who either might be returning after a break, or may be new players that enter Mistlands for the first time.

Or you might be even an experienced player who's been through Ashlands already, who is interested in a different perspective on how to handle Mistlands.

Beforehand I like to say, that Mistlands feels much like the Swamps when you enter them for the first time. Hard hitting mobs, low visibility, some OMGWHATDAFUG!!!111oneelven! moments.

You know, usual Valheim stuff. ;)

Don't be despaired. You can handle it. Here's the tools you need to enter the Mistlands with confidence. All armor should be preferably at least upgrade level 3.

1. Wisp light - That's a given. No light, you won't get far.
2. Barley Wine Fire Protection potion - You WILL need it, whenever you are going to fight Gjalls, the trolls of the Mistlands. Trust me on this.
3. Padded Armor Helmet - Protect your noggin'!
4. Padded Armor Greaves - Yes, your legs need protection as well.
5. Root Armor Chest - What? Why? There's a reason. Seekers, the big insects you will encounter in Mistlands dish out mostly(!) pierce damage, the Root armor chest is specifically designed to counter that.
6. Serpent Scale shield - Yes, that one. If you have it. Even a lvl 1 shield has superior pierce protection to any other shield out there. With it and some decent food, you will have no problem blocking Seeker attacks. In case you don't have the serpent shield, a lvl 3 BM shield will have to do. I highly suggest, though, to get at least a lvl 1 serpent scale shield ASAP.
7. Wolf Fang spear - Together with the Serpent Scale shield, the wolf fang spear is the perfect companion for dishing out pierce damage, to which Seekers are vulnerable to (at least to the best of my knowledge, please correct me if I'm wrong here).
7. Black Metal sword or any good melee one handed weapon of your choice - As I've just learned, any weapon will do the job, as long as it's dishing out either lots of pierce, slash or blunt damage.
8. Black Metal atgeir - In case you want some crowd control and superior pierce damage, the Black Metal atgeir still rules supreme and can also decently block. A must have everywhere you go.
9. Draugr Fang bow with Needle or Poison arrows - You know, when you need to dish out the pain from afar. Best used against Gjalls. Aim for their tick-ladden bellies.

Food is easy: get the best you can get for Plains level.
1. Serpent Stew - best health food.
2. Lox Pie - next best health food.
3. Blood Pudding - best stamina food.

As soon as you're able to, the Misthare Supreme (I call them scares or scabbits) is a step up from Serpent Stew. Interestingly, Honey Glazed Chicken has exactly the same stats as serpent stew, so go for it, once you can.

The salad is a much better stamina food than the blood pudding and easy to make, each salad takes one Jotunn puff, one onion, and one cloud berry. You make them in batches of three.

A tip I picked up here in the forums: Whenever you encounter ticks, roll them off, then kill them. If you let them stick to you, they will drain you dry in seconds. Thanks to the player that posted it here.

With the gear, food and tips mentioned above, you should be able to rock the Mistlands and the Infested Mines no problems.

Did I miss something? Please let everybody know.

Now go out there and squash some bugs!

Seekers are resistant to all physical damage. Best bet is Frostner for 1hand. Poison bombs are great as well. Overall good list.

Thank you, @Shoeboogie! I think you're right. I did use the BM sword and it dished out very good damage as well. I will update the post.

With spear one can hit big and small seekers in abdomen which has a weekness instad of resistance. Spear also is nice vs Gjals (point blank thow up) as long as one remember that projectiles in valheim are shot from a point in front of the player - usually about 1m out.

2h hammers are really good in the mines, especially since its very easy to get a sneak attack bonus with them. They also clean Gjal ticks pretty well. The knockback also make it similar in crowd control to aetgirs.

Stamina for movement actions is modified by movespeed, so using fenris set can get us up high with less effort, it also gives fire res.

Considering as spear is a movement based weapon* i'd not pair it with any tower shield. If anything i sometimes run it alone with no off-hand, as it still can parry seekers.
* - we can footsie bait attacks, run in-out to pick up thrown spear, or jump on top/past enemy to hit critical parts, its also one of the few multi hit penalized weapons so picking right spot to attack from is important too.

Bring a Black Metal Axe. You need it to harvest the trees in Mistlands, & to make & upgrade a BM pickaxe once you have some Yggdrasil Wood.

Once you make a BM pick, use it to gather some Marble (you only need 8 for cauldron) and a few more for Black Forge upgrades.

Stock up on Ooze Bombs for Infested Mines, you can trow them through or at doorways & entryways to poison anything in range, easily killing or at least softening up any stronger enemies on the other side.

Stamina mead, stock up on Medium Stamina meads, you will need heaps of stamina in the Mistlands.

Medium Healing mead, you will inevitably at some point get rushed & will take a hit or 2 at some point sooner or later.

Barley Wine is also good so keep the fermenters full at all times the second you can put a batch on, do it, then go explore while you are waiting for it to brew.

Keep a few grand for some eggs from Haldor, and hatch some chickens to make Honey Glazed Chicken, really good alternate food to Serpent Stew (or paired with it)

Huntsman Bow, for the -4 meter aggro radius, you can snipe when you get a clear shot, and doesn't glow, making you less visable to enemies nearby. Pair this with either high damage arrows or Frost arrows for good effect on targets.

If you want to evade a Gjall, turn your wisplight off temporarily if you haven't been detected, and stay in the mist for a few moments, also un-eqip any glowing weapons so you aren't spotted easily.

Leave Merjingjord at home, waste of a slot, and you'll be using Wisplight anyway.

Serpent Shield is a good option if you want to stack armour with it too, Harnesk is also a good option provided you have Barley Wine on hand.

This is good. Very good. Perhaps you could write a guide that follows up on this very popular one .

I play sword and board.. Do just fine with the BM shield and BM sword. Frostiner is also good as it knockbacks and slows.. really any build works good if you have the skill.

A few tips:

-Learn the skeeker attack patterns and time parry.

-Root Armor Chestpiece: From swamp works well with pierce resists.

-Fight seekers on level ground only. Don't try to mele them on hills and in rock crevices.. you wont be able to hit them and they will rock your world. Going to high ground wont help you as they fly up and will poke your eyeballs out or knock you off to take huge fall damage. Lead them to level areas and fight them there, stand your ground.

-When you spot a infested mine it will be guarded by seekers, some with stars.. usually 2-3 or more. Drop a portal a ways away and ready bonemass power if it gets gnar gnar

-Said above but the ooze bombs are excellent in the mines. I make sure I have two stacks at least if not more, saved up from the swamp.

-Arbalest: if you like you can try your hand at this big weapon. Its slow to reload but doesn't use any stamina and has very little bolt drop off and hits hard as a truck. Great for Gjall and for wabbit hunting

-Bow: I like the frost arrows..they are the best for me. They slow the bugs and do cold damage. Really good. The bugs are not weak to any mele damage type.

-Gjall.. try to maneuver / run under it and behind it.. Will confuse it and you can get a shot off at its underside where its vulnerable. Don't try to fight it on rocks .. lead it to an open area.

-Map: The black areas on the map have very little mist. Good place to farm wabbits and fight seekers.

-Lead mobs to the poor Dvergr towers and digs..especially the Gjall and let them do the dirty work. You'll also get lots of stuff from the ensuing mayhem.

-Stamina: No stamina usually = death. If the other biomes didnt teach you stamina conservation the Mistlands sure will. Go slow at first, walk don't run, and rest. Get the hell out of there at night or you will likely meet Mr Red Seeker.. who will one tap you.

-Get a farm for jotun puffs set up asap. I usually use a cleared out Dvergr tower as a farm portal base and setup a farm near it with BM walls and wisp torches to clear out the area.

-Bring 10 BM Bars and 2 Iron into the Mistlands, as well as a portal obviously.

-One you get your hands on the first ML weapons your outlook will vastly improve.

-You can fish in the Mistlands. Just sayin...

-Take your time, run the best food ( especially in the mines) and above all else have fun. ML gets a lot of hate but I actually find it really enjoyable.. and beautiful.

Cheers,

The three best ways to deal with ticks are rolling (either a dodge roll, or a stealth roll, both work) The 2-handed hammer, or the spin attack of an atgier. All 3 will dislodge all ticks when used.

Good reading, thanks!

Ooze bombs.
They beat every other pre-Mistlands weapon when it comes to killing groups of seekers and ticks, you'll probably be swimming in the mats anyway and they make clearing out infested mines a cakewalk.

3-4 stacks should tide you over until you can craft some proper Mistlands gear and you should have the mats to craft those easily just from your time in the swamp.
