The main issue is while you are riding it everything is considered a sneak attack. I watched deathsquitos do like 200 damage to them.

Yeah the damn sneak attack pisses me off. I wish they'd make armor for it and be able to curb aggressiveness or SOMETHING... otherwise it's just half useless to venture into taming loxes. Fun tho.

Thats the spirit that is needed for lox and smiliar creatures. I´m in the same boat.
They have no self-preservation at all. They will run into fires, aggro to charge anything and everything, damage your belongings and pen, can't eat anything you don't pick for them - wolves are the only exception as they will eat the meat dropped from most kills.
You can't put armor on them or train them to do anything.
I've mostly given up on tames. They are just a meat source.
