Valheim

Valheim

Beginner - never have enough bones. Trying mods but headache.
Tried adding a mod that let the regular creatures drop bones. That sounds simple but it needs another mod. I couldn't get it to work. Mods are confusing in Valheim. They require this overlord mod called BepInEx. Then it need BepInEx Manager. Then the mod you get needs other support mod.

All the while not a single mod page or youtube vidder tells you WHERE TO PUT THE MOD IN YOUR FOLDER. That should have been repeated instructions on each mod. Instead they keep promoting Mod Managers. Which is fine but unless I know how to do it manually I can't check the manager's work. And guess what, the manager is not putting the mods in the folders right.

To top that the second mod you must have the BepInEx Manager is made by someone who is angry at Nexus over their TOS. So they refused to update on Nexus but only on Thunderstore which has a mod manager that does not put the mods in the correct folders. So you have the option to manually do it but no one tells you what folder they go in.

NO ONE TELLS YOU SQUAT AROUND HERE LIKE THEY ALL ASSUME YOU KNOW THIS ALREADY LIKE THEY ASSUME WE ALL WENT TO COMPUTER SCHOOL I'M OLD I DID NOT GO TO COMPUTER SCHOOL

I started putting everything in the plugin folder that is the only info I got put it in the BepInEx plugin folder.

OMG there are only a hundred versions of BepInEx itself all over why are these obsolete versions available for download???????????????????? W H Y

I just want more bones. I can't harvest nuff bones to make and fix my beginner gear. Someone said go in black forest but there is a crow guide telling me get out of the black forest. I'm like I saw nothing there that was scary so idk seems like the game maker just wants me to kill the big beginner deer boss.

BUT I NEED BONES TO FIX MY STUFF NOW

Everything is hard to find at first. As you get better things come quicker and easier. Bones will soon be the least of your concerns and you'll have stacks and stacks of them.

Troll caves are a great place for bones, there are usually 2 or 3 at the entrance, and often a dozen or more in the chests inside.
Look for Skeleton spawners in burial chambers. Also look for stone structures in either the black forest or mountains (more spawners). There are an abundance of skeleton spawners in the swamps.
It is interesting that some would try a mod made by an unaffiliated programmer before they will read the darn Wiki to investigate stuff or FAQs on this forum that warns them that mods are not supported.

The Word is dependencies, if this is an alien concept your not ready to use them.

Then it need BepInEx Manager.
Never heard of this screen shot please..

That could be because it s on EVERY SINGLE mods web page, seen plenty pf videos it dos get glossed over because it so Basic. The answer individual mods go in BepinExs "Plugins folder"

Thunderstore works flawlessly for 99.99% of users. You may be the 1% but why even reference Nexus if your on Thunderstore they are two ways of doing the same thing. If you are down loadign off Nexus and manually trying to add to Thunderstore then well you are asking for a world of Hurt!

Not factually correct the BepinEx used is tailored to Valheim currently version 5.4.2202

Guess what Grandad I am 60+ and dIdn't either its not as easy for me as some either but I an usually manage WITHOUTSHOUTIGNABOUT IT!

I started putting everything in the plugin folder that is the only info I got put it in the BepInEx plugin folder.
Good you have it correct...

Because decent programmers keep back ups? Plus if their is a unexpected compatibility issue you can try and older version to see if that eliminates the issue in troubleshooting. If you just fire up Thunderstore search the mods you want through that and let it download them it will also download BepinEx of the right current version.

BUT I NEED BONES TO FIX MY STUFF NOW

Try going out at Night in the meadows especially around the stone Dolmen and Triathlons. You will get more skeletons their (in Vanilla or Modded)

So action plan to try and fix all this:

1) make a note of any mods you fancy trying, on paper.
2) DELETE everything you have downloaded from Nexus (It can be made to work but at this point i think your in too much of a Muddle so this is slash/burn/replant)
3) Open Thunderstore> Creat new profile for Valheim.
4) *In Thunderstore* search the Mods you want to try. Hit install - I would avoid any mod that's older than 6 months at least at first try.
5) Hit the "Modded" button on Thunderstore (Top right of screen )
6) wait for Valheim and mods to load (will be longer than normal - you are added more content yes?)
7) Log in and play as normal (Unless you are on somebody else's Dedicated server in which case THEY should have told you what Mods they use or not!!) By log in I meant "solo" mode. You should try that first at the minimum.
8) Report back here with screenshot please and we will help you further as needed.
My advice would be to deinstall the game, remove the orginial game- and mod-folders (important, if there's any other folder feel free to add to this), reinstall the game and then do a fresh start, you weren't that far in anyway. Just to make sure that your game files are neat and clean, so no disappearing items in the future.

This game does not have a quest log, just some bare minimum faq/explanations on things you already discovered/unlocked. But it is crucial to try and follow the intented game design in you first playthrough in order to get the best possible experience. You do so by following the instructions of the raven (as far as they will update, later you'll be on your own - you'll just get a few subtile hints by things you unlock like potions).

There were a lot of really good posts already with a lot of helpful tips and tricks.
You really don't need mods, in 80-90% of cases you'll be fine just progressing further in the game and venturing out to search for new/more resources instead. That's the way, the game is designed.

Try and see if you get a hang of it - if not, go try a different game, this one can be overwhelming at times and after all it's just a matter of taste.

Since you were already willing to get back to mods in order to play your game tho, you might as well consider to get some help in form of guides. I did a few up to the 3rd biome of the game ( The first one is just an introduction to the core game mechanics and the rest are walkthroughs). Not 100% up to date but still covers the main progression. Maybe that would help you.
Two suggestions to help you with the mod-problem and the bones...

1. Clean uninstall the game and reinstall it. Without ay mods. Because: This game is still being worked on. Each update can break your mods. And furthermore, modding the game for more bones is way more work than simply obtaining the bones with existing methods.

2a. To get bones quite quickly, you can use a club, look for a burial chamber and clear it carefully until you find one of these dark piles. Don' destroy the pile. Let the skeletons spawn and kill them until you have enough bones to build all you would like.

2b. As an alternative to add bones to the game where you should not not get them anyways you can use the in-game console with devcommands to spawn bones in.

But once again - before you put that much work in obtaining bones: You won't need too many. In early game you can use them to upgrade leather armor and troll armor, the club and the stagbreaker. You can also build a tower shield of bones. That's all in that phase.
You might need more bones later for the dead raiser. But when you came that far, collecting bones is more a matter of patience (or you might just keep a chest full of bones while you progress)
I can vouch for the bone shield being super awesome. ;) No, really. It works very well in the swamps, maybe even mountains. And it looks cool to boot.

Figured it out myself.

Step (A):
Install BepInEx the latest version into Valheim steam folder (many youtube vids on this for further explanation follow along).

BepinEx must be installed first before anything else it is the thing that makes mods work. YOU MUST OPEN YOUR GAME AFTER THIS TO THE LOGIN PAGE so BepInEx can generate and to see if it works. You will get a readout that you can see in window mode. This readout will tell you if something went wrong.

Step (B):
Next right after this you must install BepInEx Configuration Manager. It's like an app that works for BepInEx shows you a panel of your mods. Will let you change some settings inside your mod like - if you got a mod that let you have more farm animals your setting might say, do you want the hogs to starve slowly over time, not starve at all, starve instantly. So you have some control over what the mod does.

Click your mouse on the login page if in full windowed then click F!. {There might be another mod/vers/setting that uses F5 it will tell you in the upper left corner if it is F5 instead of F1}.

Step (C):
Google anything you want to improve your game and click the Thunderstore link read for any extra info. Unless you read something otherwise on the page you use only two folders inside of BepInEx - file manager config folder or file manger plugin folder.

.cfg goes into the config folder of BepInEx
.yml goes into the config of BepInEx
.dll goes into the plugins of BepInEx

Unless told other wise other files can be tossed bunch useless stuff creator blab blab blab.

-----------------------

I cannot get any manager to work with my computer I have to manual. People may be right I may not understand it. You didn't shame me. If I came here screaming then yeah I did not understand or why else would I be in a pinch? Dah, I don't understand.

I am guessing at this point maybe these managers make their own file system and don't actually put the files where they go proper. I have no idea but I have not got a single one of them to do what I want. Not nexus, not thuderstore, not r2modman. None of them put the mods in the folder nor did they have a page I could visit to check to see if all mods were up to date.

I hate that old versions of mods are publicly displayed. If the mod was updated then the older outdated versions need to go into a dev access folder where the general mod using public doesn't have to see it. It's just confusing to those of us who are not mod makers.

Poke fun of me if you want to I told you I'm not a computer genius. I'm old I have no idea what your generation is on about half the time. I didn't have computer lab in school. Before my time.

Good to hear that you got it sorted out. Have fun playing!
Thx.

One more thing. Since I decided to do this all manually no mod manager I did find a mod that shows you if you mods are outdated. ModAge by Azumatt. Appears on loading screen under Quit.

Bones are pretty easy to get. You can find them inside of Black Forests by killing Skeletons and going into the Burial Sites.
Like all things at the start of the Game the crow is making sure you at least know how to survive on your own properly.

Black Forests primarily hold Trolls which are the main threat, as they can easily one shot you if you're not good at evading attacks.

But they also drop Troll Hides which make for good armor early game.

I have probably 1500 bones I could donate to your cause if you'd like. Lol, this game gives you so much bone throughout the game it becomes a serious nuisance.

Skeletons are tough only in very beginning of the game, especially on higher difficulty.

Soon after you upgrade stuff , you'll be swimming in bones throughout the game

One tip I have for new players going after skeletons, especially in the beginning of a new game with a new character, is that it helps to use the right weapon for the job. Skeletons take 1.5x damage from fire and blunt attacks so the simple starter club is actually quite effective against them. They take less damage from piercing attacks like spears and arrows. They telegraph their attacks quite early so it's not too hard to move out of their attack path, or to dodge, block, or parry them once you get used to their sounds and movements as they are about to attack.
@༒ǝꞁf⚣٩๏̯͡๏)۶: You can't be that old if you somehow figured out how to give you that name. ;)

I'm happy that you got your mods to work, but then again, they would NOT've been necessary. Also, Thunderstore works just fine, and yes, it does put mods where they need to go, and yes, it can autoupdate BepInEx and other mods as well, when they become outdated.

The rule for all of these are easy, you just install the latest version. Always.

That said, I'm very close to 63 years old and I had no problems installing mod managers and mods. You just have to decide which one to use, and then stick with it. Running more than one mod manager is spelling trouble.

And again, you wouldn't have needed to go through this hassle, if you'd just checked the world modifier options IN-GAME.

You can increase the drop amount of resources vastly, so you will always swim in bones. And you will very shortly anyway. They're only kinda scarce in the beginning.

Good luck to you and over all: Have fun!
