Are texture packs "worth" it or do they ruin the game?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Go with what you feel.

HD texture packs are jarring, IMO. I can understand some things like improving tree foliage. But I appreciate how the devs managed to make everything clear with low res textures.

Do they effect FPs at all, I mean it's pretty chronic at some of my builds, what would a h.d pack be like?

HD packs are a joy to see. But yeah they push your graphics card a bit more.

Heres a rule of thumb:

Graphics card has <4 Gb of VRAM - Just don't do it, Do not Mod the game or do not use major Mods (QOL should be fine)
4-6 Gb VRAM install a Low/med Pack OR Mod the game do not do both (but see above)
8 Gb+ VRAM Should be fine to install the best HD pack and Mod the game to large extent.

Lets face it with Valheims near non excistant optimising if your near a Big Base (8000+ instances) you frame rate may tank depending on your CPU not your Graphics so much weather you have a HD pack or not.

Thanks for making me check that Willybach has released an update! I think it's night and day better with his texture pack.

I have an RX 6800 XT, and have never had any issues running hit texture pack maxed out at 4k, so I can't confirm, but there are claims that his texture pack actually improves performance.

In any case, I at least highly recommend trying it... and donate if you like it and have the means.

I already tried it. His texture pack didn't work for me. Black screen on startup
Also the filesize is ridiculous and seems much more complicated now to install than it used to be.

And I'm not downloading bepinx or stuff like that onto my computer. I already have thunderstore mod manager for a couple mods and it has bepinx already, if the hd terrain pack cannot work with that then it's a hard pass for me

1. HD textures are a matter of taste. Either you like them, or even deem them essential, or you don't. Simple as that.
2. BepInEx is essential to be able to run mods. Without BepInEx mods on Valheim simply don't work. But since you already have it installed, no point in installing it again.
3. Some texture packs need mods to work, some don't. Usually Willybach's stuff should work with mods just fine, unless you are already using another texture pack. Then you might be experiencing conflicts.

They did apparently move the location of the texture files, but if you already have bepinx installed, you just have to copy the texture files into Valheim\valheim_Data\StreamingAssets\SoftReferenceableAssets\Bundles. At least that's where I found them to be.

Honestly the vanilla graphics are kind of growing on me. I just started again after a long break
I'll probably just leave them be. The lighting is gorgeous already
