IS ALWAYS A CHEST IN THE VIKING'S GRAVEYARDS?
This is the second Viking cemetery that I have dug up from one end to the other and I can't find the chest......

They do not all have a treasure.

Sometimes all you find is bones.

If you have the Wishbone Amulet from Bonemass if will detect those skeletons/treasure.

I never really found anything other than jewels and jewelry.

I've found pearls or amber outside the box, I don't know if that still happens.

As a suggestion to you, dont bother trying to dig them up. If you're only in the meadows at this point in game play, or just starting black forest, you cant sell those items found nor use the gold found until you find the vendor Haldor anyway.

As you progress through game play too, you'll encounter more than enough treasure typically naturally through cave and crypt and mine exploration that you'll likely end up having more gold than you need once you do sell everything.

Shipwrecks are the same, some have a chest, others no.

almost always is, more times than not. And true as well nothing you find in the meadow chests are significant enough to search for. As well as most will have some sort of loose item around inside the area. Wishbones can locate it.

shipwrecks can get you that first precious piece or 2 of fine wood, though. About 20 units, actually.

that and most any BF tower ruins from the stool out front. Sometimes other misc stuff inside(the large footprint towers). Meadow Lean-to's have 2 corewood or 4. Starter FWood Bow. Tin from the barrels and copper ore from a few well aimed troll strikes, along with 5 cores. You got yourself a speedrun. ;p

If you have Stagbreaker you can hit the ground. If there is a chest underground, it will show a positive amount of damage. Keep hitting until the chest is destroyed and the treasure will appear above ground. You can also use Stagbreaker to locate the chest and then dig with your pickaxe.

found a sword at one once

a weapon in a chest, wow? Over 1200 hrs played and I've never found a 'item' or weapon in a chest anywhere. Arrows, treasure, gold, food, potion, etc...never a 'finished'/crafted weapon?--does the wishbone indicate 'treasure'?? in the ruins?

was this on a non-local game server. I can say I have never once found an outlying object of any sort in any chest, nor have I seen a chest popped on twitch where it had some unexpected 'thing'. Finding a sword is highly highly highly irregular, to say the least. It would speak to a core mechanic having a deep deep un-noticed internal miscomputation. That would a singular and unique case AFAIK. I've opened hundreds of ship chests in the meadows, and at least a dozen or more in BF. Further than that I cannot say, in game personally. But, I have at least as many hours watching others play as I have in play myself. 4.3k hrs nothing has ever been that askew to my knowledge.
