Why would you spoil the experience for yourself? Imagine discovering it actually playing the game. Probably way cooler. I dont usually play betas cause the smoother experience after a few weeks of waiting seems more fun. U just impatient? :D
Not sure if they have. Last I heard, there were 3 remaining biomes: Ashlands, Northlands, and they want to update the Ocean. Ashlands is what we're on now. It's possible that Ocean wont be a full biome, and may just be a mini patch like Hildr or Hearth and Home. Its also possible they do Ocean after 1.0. They havent said that I've heard.
"And is it reasonable for me to start a new world now with Ashlands and just never go to the north pole so it wouldnt generate?" - You should be fine doing just that. On PTB current patch notes there is a link to a guide for getting started with it. Read that. It describes what they did for terrain elevation with Ashlands. They will do something similar with the northern lands, and they did something similar with mistlands. Basically If you dont go into those areas and dont force the land to generate, the game should do it properly after the initial patches get released. They will always hedge their coments saying something like 'for best experience, start a new world'. But the game will still populate the terrain with new biome content like it should regardless, even if for some reason it cannot change the elevations like the scripts intend it to be.
"Or have they said the full release will require us to start a fresh character and world to get the full benefits of the full game anyway? Maby some content, achievements, stuff like that...?" I think they've expressly been building this game with the understanding that your characters and worlds would carry over as much as possible. They re-did world gen a couple years ago and you might have needed to do a new world then. But I think everything in the past couple of years has been built on the same basic world/save engine. Like, you've been able to take an existing character and just continue playing on it into the new biome.
Also in case you didnt know: your character can jump to different worlds. Even if they said something like "your world is incompatible" you could just load up a character and bring it to a new world with all your skills, unlocks, and anything they are carrying.
I really doubt they are going to do a save compatibility wipe on 1.0 release because what would be the point? Just to force everyone to start from scratch? There are people with hundreds or thousands of hours in one character or world and that would ruin it for them, for basically no reason.
