Looks like it's been removed...and after selling a billion copies of the game.
Like you would be down on the undersea floor but magic would prevent the waters around to reach that special magic place… that would be cool.
Just to give some more assets to ocean biome and others things to do than just sail through it…
But first the northern pole now, that’s the priority obviously, although I hope they gonna add some stuffs in the ocean in a way or an other.
Really though, aside from some more sea creatures and pirates, what's to add?
Sea creatures, map design with rivers running through continents with walled in enemy towns that are easiest attacked by boat, deep sea fish that can only be gotten in deep areas with sea monsters (which also give good buff foods), rare mats for boat crafting from sea spawns, weapons for fighting the sea creatures (harpoons, nets, oil and fire, etc.), underwater serpent dungeons you have to swim down too, special fish and monsters that spawn during storms (which cause you to also have to repair your boat), could make it auto sail while fishing to make it worth traveling instead of portaling everywhere, maybe add drag nets that catch fish as you sail across places... that would probably make it really nice if they did all that... pirate boats too of course... you could have a boat decked out for different things: monster hunting, fishing, shore town raiding, pirating... they could add a pirate merchant with quests to earn special cosmetics for your boat and yourself
Mistlands and Ashlands are "title updates." Bog Witch, Hearth and Home, and Frost Caves were not announced until like a month or less out I believe. They might do an ocean update but not as a "title update"
They "removed" it because the players wanted biomes first before anything else. They stated this in an announcement quite some time ago, that's why the roadmap was changed.
It's a tradeoff, do they want to finish the game (at which point modders will have an easier time) or do they want to keep going forever. Currently it looks like the former, probably because they don't have viable business (as explained yet) for "forever development" - few games do. It should be noticed e.g. Paradox games technically call themselves finished by 1.0 but then have a forever strategy of incremental DLC funded development nonetheless.
We did get some ocean-esque additions with Ashlands (new ship, new water mob) and I would expect we will see the same with the North.
Some of the ships need some polish work and the Ocean as a biome could greatly benefit from more POIs (like the turtle) so I remain hopeful we will see such things.
