Bone? Does it do anything?
So been playing the game for a while, and I always seem to end up with a lot of bone later on in the game.

Is there anything it actually does later on? bonemeal or something? currently it appears to do nothing

Yes. However I don't want to spoil your experience. Check your recipes. Make sure you've picked up (and perhaps dropped) at least one of every item type you've found. Picked at least one of every pickable plant, chopped down (and picked up the drops) at least one of each type of tree you find, kill at least one of each type of creature you find and again pick up (but don't have to keep) what they drop.

Also check your recipes and upgrades at your workbench, check each tab of the build menu of your hammer. These things will change as you progress.

It's mostly used for early game item crafting and upgrading, but there's a couple items and an ammo type it's used for much later, so doesn't hurt to keep a stock of it.
there are a lot of stuff in the game and not all are usefull after a point

Chests are so cheap there's no reason not to hoard everything. And bone fragments come in handy later when you want to level up your crossbow skill without wasting rarer mats.

Or just dig a trench, stick a workbench in it, roof it over, and call it the village dump. Everything you throw in will keep. Just in case you'll need it someday.

I keep a couple stacks of every thing and then I store surplus materials in the obliterator and when its full I pull the lever.

Bone tower shields can be nice for decoration.

That would eventually hurt your game performance

Not if it is in a zone that is rarely loaded. It's not like you'd put your village dump anywhere upwind of your village.

Yum, ancient desiccated skeleton soup. Yeah, stockpile all resources, you never know when a patch or mod will add a use for early game junk.

I mean, we're talking bones. Lack of bones can be resolved in minutes.
