stuck and about to give up - grinding wheel wont place

Have the correct items
No matter what I do - flatten ground, make building bigger, make new stone cutter etc nothing works so cant progress. Dont have any cheats active tried with and without. Put in and out of storage. Getting to the point where I am loosing interest in the game.

Yeah really strange unicorn. Sounds like some mods or something jacked up your game. As you can see in my photo my grinding stone is right next to my forge and between it and a workbench. I haven't had any of the above issues the others speak of.. but I have never modded my game. Im not sure why these forge upgrade range issues are so picky in Valheim. One of the many mysteries I haven't quite figured out. *shrug*

is it completely sheltered with roof where you are trying to place it? it needs that.. real roof not floor tiles, also what is it saying when it wont place? im sure it's something silly lol

placing the spice rack is still the bane of my valheim experience. Ive taken to designing new homes around it, its that picky. The bellows is fairly cranky too. The grinding stone is a distant third to those two, but its annoying enough. They really, really need to double the range on all the upgrades.

Agree here. I typically build only viking style homes.. with a hearth in the middle of my main house used for cooking and warmth. So there are no walls around it. Everything is fine until the spice rack and pots and pans... and there is no adjacent wall in range to place them on. I've worked around this with a 2nd floor in some homes and in most cases I just make a separate building that is a kitchen. Always have a 2nd building that is a workshop because of these issues.

You can hang them off of the roof. If you have a tall roof, you could probably attach a beam down to within range.

This is very easy way to solve it.

Place it under the floor, dig a hole and place it under it.

or place it above it

As long its connected, dosnt matter where you place it, it can be in the air or under the floor in the ground.

roof is not necessary to place the item, only to interact with the forge.

you need approximately the distance shown to place the grinding wheel. if it's too close you get the mesg. if you want it closer place it where you want then move the forge closer. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3243307970

I have tried every layout possible even a new world. It just stays red and says needs to be near workstation or needs more room. I have built a huge building for it still same problems. Its so stupid.

Can you take a screenshot of the forge and where you are trying to place the wheel (with the hammer active) and post the screenshot in the forum?

If all your other forge additions work (you were able to place them) the only thing that might be the issue is you are trying to place it too close to another forge upgrade.

As others have said it would be most helpful if you took a snap of your current layout and the messages you are getting as well.

I do not see your forge in picture. Maybe you re trying to upgrade your stonecutter on accident? The grinding wheel is a forge upgrade but I do not see a forge in your screenshot.

you need a FORGE near it.

what you have there are :

WORKBENCH.
SMELTER.
STONECUTTER.

NONE of these 3 is a FORGE.

so its no suprise you cannot place it anywhere. youre missing the workstation that this thing is meant for.

thats what happens when you use cheatcommands before actually playing the game normally first.
