two-storey house
I built a two-storey house with the idea of placing all my workbenches on one floor, and furniture, a bed and so on on the other.

The floors are separated by floor blocks, and therefore, the game does not allow me to place either a bed or one of the workbenches on the ground floor. More precisely, I can place them, but I can't use them, because the game says that there should be a roof over them

Is there any way to do what I have in mind?

You should be able to, as long as there is a roof over the second floor. I built a building that was technically 2 stories, I just didnt put flooring for the second story.

with stone or better this works with just floor pieces. for wood you need some extra steps as above poster mentioned as wood floor pieces do not count as roofs by the game. stone and better floor pieces DO count as roofs.

You seem to lack a proper roof. Floor tiles do not count as roof.
Building thatch over the top most structure protects everything under it. Work bench coverage is now a cylinder instead of a sphere.

As long as you level the ground you can build a 1 story building with a 2nd story attic with regular wood support beams, a 2 story building with a 3rd floor attic with core wood support beams, and a 4 story building with wood iron support beams.

Stone pillars on the first floor will allow you to place things on the 2nd floor that require contact with the ground or stone (like a hearth or smelter) while still using wood flooring for every thing else.

You have to build the structure with a proper roof. I usually do outer walls, a couple of upper floor and get a roof on as a priority. You won't have access to stone early game, but you can easily get a two storey building using only beginning game materials - just wood. Just start with a smaller structure that you can expand later - if you are in a spot you want for a meadows base.

Have you been to the black forest yet?
