Valheim
Any tips for a new player?
I just started this game and so far everything has been pleasant. But now I have the build hammer and I'm trying to build my first little base...

I'm finding it impossible.

I assume the first thing I need to do is place some floors, but they are invisible while I'm placing them because the grass is tall.. everywhere in the starting area.

Is it a normal part of the tutorial that they want you to build your first base blind this way?

This is very odd.

Once I place it down, I can see it a little bit if I angle myself just right with the light. But the grass and terrain don't really allow me to see it and I absolutely 100% see nothing prior to placing it, so I can't really align anything.

Also I see that shift, Q, and E have something to do with snapping, but none of them really ever enabled me to actually snap a floor to another floor lol. Are they just there as jokes. Is it kind of like an in-joke that snapping isn't possible? That's fine if so, just wanted to make sure I'm not missing out on some actual snapping ability like I'm used to in every other game in this genre.

Monsters can hear any noises you make.
You can hear noises the monsters make, come very useful in Mistlands biome.
Blocking instead of parrying especially when out numbered can be the difference between life and death.
Suppose there is a monster that always annoys you.

Instead of killing him, push him or pull with a harpoon into a hole in the ground with vertical walls. Cannot respawn, cannot escape, cannot annoy.

Especially useful in the mountains: all stone golems are best kept in old and empty silver mine.

Build a small tower nearby, but out of reach, to practce archery (with weakest bow and arrows, only hits count) or practice magic with ice staff - golems are immune to ice so you can practice as long as you want. Fully encosed tower with small window for shooting is the best - for rested bonuses. Rested bonuses are very important. A campfire under the tower will keep you warm.

Another thing: avoid all debuffs, they are bad, especially for new player

Always have a rested bonus, stay out of the water or at least, make a campfire, sit nearby and wait until you are dry and rested. Rain or night? Stay home.

Of course, always be fed, eat 3 different foods. Collect all edible items and start cooking food as soon as you can.
1800 + Hours, multiple playthoughs, Valheim addict.

If you have killed Eikthyr you have passed the test of the meadows and now got Hard Antler which you can use to make a antler pickaxe and progress into the next biome and on to the next boss. This is how it will go till you complete what is available in the game.
As others have said, you have barely scratched the surface of what this game will offer.

My non spoiler tips for success:
Listen to the raven tips and don't ignore him. His tips are saved in the compendium.
Master the food buff system.. This is the main difference between life and death.
Learn about the rested buff and how to increase its bonus.
Read runestones you find in the world. Some have helpful tips.
Use the Hoe/Pickaxe to modify the land for building.
Learn the building, snapping system and the color codes for support on buildings. Its one of the best things in this game.
Always have good food buffs running and be rested.
Explore a lot.. more the better.
Don't venture out at night unless absolutely necessary or you are well geared.
Become an expert on all aspects of fighting: Especially blocking, parry and dodge roll.
Learn what weapons work best on certain baddies but focus on one weapon type.
Don't forget your forsaken powers (f) when facing strong baddies or bosses.
Use the map and markers and master that system. Mark sources of food/berries etc.
Organize your storage effectively and have needed materials close to your crafting stations.

So much more but that should get you started. There isn't a lot of hand holding in this game so you will have to use your noggin and be creative.

Finally, DO NOT RUSH THIS GAME. Spend as much time in Valheim as possible and take it slow. The first playthrough is a real treat. YOU WILL DIE, probably a lot, but that's the price to pay to earn Odin's favor and become a badass Viking.

I just killed Moder and have finally finished crafting all possible wolf/silver gear and upgrading them to the max tier. I have a portal set up in a large plains biome.

How am I doing?

I have a nice two story stone home surrounded by a pretty impenetrable moat as well.

I guess you're progressing pretty fast! You could perhaps notch up the difficulty if you don't want to finish the game way too fast before the final part is added by the devs.

So here comes the boom....

In my experience the faster your progress pace is the harder you crash in Mistlands.

That sounds scary

But I'm upgrading everything to the max and finding all agricultural items and making sure I've found the best meads/potions/foods possible every step of the way before proceeding. e.g. I'll scour the Plains until I've found everything there is to find there.

Also, I establish a full base with all crafting/forging/cooking stations and upgrades and a full portal network in every biome. I have one in the starting forest, the black forest, the mountains, and the swamp.

I'll be doing the same for the plains.

So I hope when I hit mistlands, I'm ready and able to do everything there is to do there as well before moving on to ashlands.
Tip for Mistlands that applies to whole Valheim experiance.

Valheim has really strong map rng. Everyones playthrough is different, some luck out, some go dry for weeks.
Mistlands is a case of patience. Going head first in the moment you enter the biome could be miserable. So poke around, understand the biome and how it works, be on the move. Sailing is your friend when searching for resources, dont bog yourself down trying to go on foot (you'll understand when you get there).

There are beautiful, clear spots to make a base in mistlands as well, but it will require a lot of site searching, and going inland. In my experiance usually there is some old construction nearby most good spots so check those out and keep rolling the dice till you find something cool, dont settle on first "ok" rock you see.

ps: mistlands span enormous area so dont be shy of just skipping large chunks of it if it looks inhospitable.

Thanks for the tips.

I'll incorporate your advice into the corpus of knowledge that characterizes the pattern of behavior I employ when I engage with this activity.
Wow weren't you just on the Black Forest yesterday? You must have been playing straight for 24 hours or more! Or is this post some kinda hoax? You're a strange one for sure. So much for taking it slow! LOL

That said...

If you have made it to the plains you should have a good understanding of the game by now and I am sure you will do fine in Plains and Mistlands.

I use the plains as my final base area and a staging area for the Mistlands. Once I hit Mistlands I usually take over a structure there vs building another base (im lazy) but you could do whatever you wish.

Beyond the ML is the new Biome Ashlands which is the current endgame. I started it but found it really buggy so taking a break till some things are fixed/patched etc.

Ill see you tomorrow when you beat the Ashlands boss I guess lol

All the best.. sounds like you are doing good. Cheers.
lol

Sounds like an easy beginners seed....but then again it all depends on the directions you explore. You can explore the same map a second time and go mostly in the opposite direction and gt a completely different results.
I wasn't in black forest yesterday bro. A few days ago at least. I've only been playing 4-8 hours a day. I beat a bunch of other games during the last few days (finally knocked out the metro exodus dlc's, HUMANITY, Trine 5, etc.)
Oh and best tip for Mistlands....

MAKE POLEARMS AND SKILL THEM UP.

These are absolutely invaluable as they have the secondary attack to knockback and that secondary attack will dislodge ticks. Not to mention they actually do great damage against the bugs that most die in a couple hits.
