Any tips for a new player?
I just started this game and so far everything has been pleasant. But now I have the build hammer and I'm trying to build my first little base...

I'm finding it impossible.

I assume the first thing I need to do is place some floors, but they are invisible while I'm placing them because the grass is tall.. everywhere in the starting area.

Is it a normal part of the tutorial that they want you to build your first base blind this way?

This is very odd.

Once I place it down, I can see it a little bit if I angle myself just right with the light. But the grass and terrain don't really allow me to see it and I absolutely 100% see nothing prior to placing it, so I can't really align anything.

Also I see that shift, Q, and E have something to do with snapping, but none of them really ever enabled me to actually snap a floor to another floor lol. Are they just there as jokes. Is it kind of like an in-joke that snapping isn't possible? That's fine if so, just wanted to make sure I'm not missing out on some actual snapping ability like I'm used to in every other game in this genre.

IIt does take a bit of getting used to but once you master it you will enjoy it.

On the grass issue. Use the Cultivator and Hoe to wipe out the grass and adjust ground level. That will stop those pesky long leaves!

or build the deck of the house up on short wooden stakes!

Have you made a hoe to enable you to flatten the ground (and remove the grass)?

The build piece you want to snap to will be highlighted. The colour of the highlight tells you how stable the piece is - they go from blue(grounded through greens to yellow to red (unstable can't snap to it)

Depending on where you build you can build directly on the dirt or on foundations - use the 1m vertical poles under your floor, or even use the horizontal poles to outline your building and snap your floors to those.

For my first building I either find an old building and fix it or build something smallish directly on the ground.

Q & E allow you to change which part of the build piece is used for snapping - for example the top or bottom.

Don't build on the ground, place poles and build on top of them.

Welcome to Valheim! Hope your journey in the Tenth World will go well! Perhaps check some of the guides that others have prepared and happy building.

Thanks, the poles were a great approach

I hadn't learned hoes yet but after getting my initial settlement up and running, they were unlocked, which allowed me to level stuff out and make things even easier. Thanks

So now I have a nice little house with a bed and a crafting bench, a chest, and a standing torch. There's a campfire and cooking rack outside.

It seems like my progress is going well.

Have I finished about 20-40% of the game's content so far? Just curious what the scope of the game is.

You just barely started to scratch the surface of this game. Most of the long time players here have way over 1000 hours played. Valheim is a long term investment. I don't want to spoil the game for you, so I won't tell you what to do, but I would listen to what the raven that occasionally pops up has to say. Oh, and I would read what the intro-screen says. The one that pops up when you first start your new character.

Cool, so I killed the deer boss and hung his antlers in the Stonehenge thing.

I see what you guys were saying about how I had just begun. But now I've basically beaten the game?

I get I can build my house up bigger, but I've killed the boss. It was a really nice experience though. I actually feel like it was perfectly portioned and didn't overstay its welcome.

Hugin[valheim.fandom.com] will let you know what is next. Listen to the ravens as they guide you through the Tenth World.

There is so much more to come. Congratulations on beating the first boss.

All the other large stones at the stonhinge where you hung your first trophy will also have a head to be hung. You have just killed the first boss of many. I am so jelouse! There is nothing like that first playthrough!

I mean, you've killed the tutorial boss. There are other, stronger bosses waiting and more biomes to explore.

Good. You started the journey. You filled in one stone out of how many? This game is harder solo and become a little grindy at times. But don't let that discourage you. You are a chosen of Odin. For started I would try and conquer the next biome. But be prepared. You can always try and escape if you can't kill something.

As advice for new players - mark the spots on the map where you have the mushrooms or anything important really. You can't always remember everything, but map can help a lot.

If you're unsure what to do next, you can review hints already given to you by Hugin.

lots of good ideas, a easy way to start building is picking a nice relatively flat area in the meadows, and learning to use the hoe a bit to flatten the ground, and then start your floor pieces or as somone suggested you could start a frame with some 2m wooden beams, then fill it in with floor get some walls and a roof, and build yourself a bed and bench make a chimney or put a fire outside at least you got shelter and you can add to it and theres plenty of more chances to build you don't need to go all out right away you might find a better spot, and i personally build frequently small places as i travel

building integrity will come into play so start with smaller buildings to get used to things imo, blue means its a foundation piece, green means its pretty sturdy then theres yellow, orange, then red meaning its about to break and you wont be able to attach another piece or it'll just collapse typically iirc its 5 pieces high with wood but the colors are an indication of the relative integrity of the piece regardless of what you're building with, blue is best red is going to give you issues building further
